Sadly, it looks as if it will be a real possibility that we will see homosexual marriage legalized in this country. Which will bring about a new question for our churches that hold to the idea that such a marriage is sinful.

If a man who is married to another man in the eyes of the state becomes converted and decides to join a baptist church, do we require him to have a divorce, or would it be enough for him to seperate from his "marriage partner"?

This question almost seems like a joke. But, should our Lord tarry, the issue will probably come up. thoughts?

I don't think they are married in God's eyes but I would recommend a legal divorce and complete separation.

If he comes to our church, a Primitive Baptist church, he's welcome to worship with us, but, immediate membership is not an option.

Sorry. My job is undershepherd to God's flock, and part of the job is protecting the flock and the church I am pastoring from any possibility of wolves of all kinds coming in.

If he is consistent for some years and still wants to join our church, okay.

According to Lev 18 this issue lead to the destruction of pagan nations by God.

Can we as an enlightened country expect to survive it?

All I have to say is:

Let them get married. It isn't going to affect you and your way to heaven. Since they are the ones that have to answer to GOD, with their sin, not you. You just have to worry about yourself, and your sins, and not judge.

    J4KC35,

This thread is about homosexual marriage and how it relates to the future of the church. Your opinion is noted, but when someone attempts to join a church, the "marriage" becomes an issue that cannot be ignored or glossed over.

    Gay marriage...

I'd initially say that there IS NO MARRIAGE. I can't imagine someone wanting to join a conservative church and not already having put the  past behind him!

So would you be satisfied if the marriage remained "on the books" but the new member just lived alone? Or would you insist on a legal seperation or divorce?

    Jeez Louise, this is weird...

OK, the repentant person must file a Gender Orientation Change Notification with the Gender Orientation and Marriage License Bureau, and submit to discipleship by the congregation's designated elder in charge of gender orientation correction...

Or maybe just beam up to the mother ship...

The word Marriage, and homosexual in the same sentence is an oximoron!

From the beginning, (Gen 2) marriage has been between a man and a women. Anything else according to Romans 1 is a sin.

IF the scenario described above ever happened, I think they should get a divorce. Then it would be up to individual churces as to how they would handle it.

You're right Major, this Weird with a capitol W!!

    Peace.

    Tam,

Lets go to the destruction of Israel at the time of Daniel. His family killed, his city wiped out and he himself dragged off into captivity. So when God says that we are to PRAY for the welfare of the city in which we live - He is right to say it. He adds "Because IN the welfare of that city is bound up your OWN welfare".

We see that is clearly the case for Daniel. Unless of course he had no feeling for his slaughtered "friends and family".

In the same way - watching the Lev 18 destruction of our nation over the "issues" that God said would "Wipe out a pagan nation" is not going to be something that "does not touch the christian".

So "yes" we should "Care" that our country would embrace a self-destructive policy. Because as God said "in the welfare of your nation is bound up your OWN welfare".

Humph! Next thing you know the church will want to know if the new convert is a wife-beater or bank-robber or massmurderer or drug-dealer or ...

Kinda reminds me of that list Paul gives in 1Cor 6...

    How about you?

    In Christ,

    Bob

its all part of Satan's New Age movement to the revelations if you think about it, the only way a one-world government can come is if 2 problems are taken care of, Overpopultion, Patriotism(these are my opinion)

#1, Overpopulation, is being taken care quite well by murder, suicide, and new in the world, homosexulaity, homosexuals can't reproduce, they can only bring people in, and these kids most will adapt to homosexuality, homosexuality, will cause poppulation dropaping

Lemme ask you - if this man were a Drunk or a cigarrette smoker would you 'require' that he stop these activities before joining the church?

I always wondered why churches require strict adherance to church dogma by new christians or new members. Isn't the purpose of the church to promote healing in these areas? Wouldn't the homosexual be better served sitting under the nurture and admonition of the Lord? Wouldn't they be better served to be accepted in love until that healing occurs, rather than requiring they change before being 'admitted' into the body? Many churches, in my opinion, make the mistake of requiring that change before accepting people with sin issues into the church. I say get 'em saved... get em in church and then let the Word and the Lord change their wrong desires into right desires through being in God's presence and sitting under righteous teaching.

Psa 37:4 Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.
Psa 37:23 The steps of a [good] man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.

Those who are afflicted or in Sin need Jesus. The church can give that to them. Funny how we often require them to change before we give them the ability to change [true change can only come through Jesus Christ].

We have to realize the meaning and purpose of Marriage as defined in scripture:

Gen 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
Gen 1:27 So God created man in his [own] image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
Gen 1:28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
Gen 2:24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

Mal 2:14 Yet ye say, Wherefore? Because the LORD hath been witness between thee and the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt treacherously: yet [is] she thy companion, and the wife of thy covenant.
Mal 2:15 And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit. And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth.

We see the purpose of male and female is the marriage covenant with the express purpose of creating 'godly seed' (remember 'be fruitful and multiply'). Homosexuals cannot reproduce with one another. Let look at what Jesus says about divorce:

Mat 19:4 And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made [them] at the beginning made them male and female,
Mat 19:5 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?
Mat 19:6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

Now given the definition and purpose and example of marriage (one man and one woman for life as was Adam and Eve), along with Jesus re-iteration of that purpose we see that God sanctions marriage - He invented it... he defined it for the purpose of creating godly offspring. This is not possible, nor does it follow the definition or example of marriage set in the Bible. Therefore, we can deduce that in a 'Gay Marriage' relationship, that marriage is not ordained of God so we do not 'put assunder' anything that God has joined together - God clearly does not advocate gay marriage - so the marriage was never of God to begin with. Therefore, the 'divorce' of a gay couple is no more sacriligous as the termination of any other business or legal contract.

And who gets custody of the kids? The Christian would likely be considered the guilty party in the eyes of the state.

Kids would go to the biological parent. If it was an adoption, I think the state should be sued for being idiots and allowing such nonsense. Getting back to reality, it would be a custody battle with the child going to the more qualified (better job, parent kid likes best, etc) parent.

Good call. However, like I said it should not be a requirement of church attendence. With the church and church body's help, that person could draw close enough to God to be healed of those wrong desires and have the sin removed by God. After all - we can do nothing of ourselves, but the power is given to us through our Father in heaven.

Clearly Jesus gave us a different example. He was friend to the sinner and publican. He ate with the bad guys. He supped with them. One problem with our society is that the CHURCH has rejected the people we are supposed to be ministering to. Part of that has to do with our own insecurity in Christ as a church. You can see the 'evolution vs the gospel' thread for my reasons why I think that is.

However, part of that is the truely unrighteous, evil, humanistic idea of Political Correctness. Jesus did not come to this world to avoid offending people... he came to destroy Satan and his work in the earth - namely sin and death.

Mat 10:34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.

Don't get too worried about offending people with the truth that you fail to speak, adhere, or promote the truth. While we may befriend the homosexual and allow them into our church membership, and promote God's healing in their life that doesn't mean that we should turn a blind eye either. Certainly, we would not give them positions of authority in our local body... but that should not excluded them from attendende or membership. Through attendence or membership is where that person or persons will recieve the greatest support to promote God's work being manifest in their lives.

Let me give you an example -

In my church, we had a woman who was stalking one of the pastors. This got rediculous to the point where she would be standing in his garage when he got home at night. The church went to court and obtained a restraining order. The order read that during specific hours of specific days (mainly during service times, or times when church staff would be around) she was required to be AT THE CHURCH! The staff of my church welcomed her and showed her the love of God to the best of their ability. Today, she is a normal, functioning member of the church body. She has been delievered from many of the pyscosis that were causing her to stalk one of the pastors in her time here. I believe THIS to be the type of example to follow in regard to any matter of sin, including homosexuality. Those people need to be loved and given the truth, not shunned by the church and told to shape up before they can join our club. Does Jesus require that we be blameless before becoming saved? No, he accepts us as we are and gives us the ability to follow him in righteousness, holiness and truth.
