    While an interesting find indeed, this is not all that unusual. There are many churches in what we might call the early church communities that were built on the remains of previous churches. Whenever they are discovered, they prove to be quite eye opening and interesting.

    To be more specific, it is a Coptic Orthodox Church. Which is distinct from the Eastern Orthodox Church. It, along with five other jurisdictions, comprise the Oriental Orthodox Church. The OO split from the rest of the Church in 451 AD over a controversy at the council of Chalcedon.
