Today's a day that America and Americans can once again stand proud on the world stage - as they should - after eight long disastrous years, a day when the world can begin to be a healthier safer place, when warmongering and militarism can be replaced by a more eirenic Leader of the Free World, when Americans have demonstrated that it is possible to live the American dream regardless of your background, when the 'original sin' of your Founding Fathers (slavery in the Land of the Free, based on ethnicity) has been finally washed away. I salute you and your new President-Elect and may God Bless America!

After being here a while you will get used to seeing Aaron putting his foot in his mouth. He does it regularly.

I seriously doubt you could imagine or survive what McCain went through in Vietnam. There was more to it than the flapping of jaws.

Put a sock in it, you have no dog in this fight. Your opinions of this past administration are the same as those who agreed with Bush early on. They all had the same information, they were all right as well. Sadam was producing biological and chemical weapons. Are you amazed those weapons weren't found. If your landlord told you heheard you had a dog in your apartment, told you he saw the dog, told you he's seen pictures of the dog, your neighbors heard the dog barking, and he was coming to take a look on the 14th of the month, and if he saw the dog in your apartment he would evict you, would you still have this dog in your apartment?

The world won't be a healthier, safer place because of this man, he is not the messiah, sorry to hurt your feelings. It will be worse. We will begin withdrawing troops and then having to fight battles on our homeland. You guys will get it too, because your lack of support shows cowardice. Bush leads an offensive surge against those who want us dead. But you don't get that.

You are talking about things you know nothing of, founding fathers, original sin, spoken out of true ignorance

What do you know about freedom, you reside in the UK......

Matt, you are entitled to your opinion but really the English need to get more information before getting involved in someone else's elections. One of yours on another forum posted a poll on who would win the presidents office and listed three candidates - in case you folks don't get the news, we only had two

Not that I think Bush did much for the country but he did the best he could in the situation he was placed and followed what he felt was best and that gets him a big

He has had a lot going on that he had no control over like 9-11 - one of his largest failures was not dealing with the 20 million illegals in the country that caused part of the health care problem as well as many other problems. It is quite possible millions of those same illegals voted for the new guy that is now in the spotlight.

I agree 100% and I also believe God's judgment is upon us and it will only get worse.

It will get so bad that the people who voted for Obama will be saying they made a mistake.

The things we will see in the next four years will affect ALL of us and it's not going to be pretty.

The youth of this country came out in droves to vote....ever wonder why?

They are the ones who want abortion and sodomy rights.

    God help our children!

I do not like Obama as a man, but I will respect the office of President, and as such, will pray for that office. It's going to need it.

As far as the OP....what roots? When this country was born, abortion and sodomy were not only illegal, but they were severly punishable by law. If either took place (and I'm sure it did) it was done in secret. Not paraded around and sanctioned by our leaders.

You need to get your facts straight.

I agree, which is why I didn't vote for Obama. He is a godless man who is for abortion and homosexual rights. Those are two good reasons alone not to vote for him. I didn't refuse to vote for him because he was black; I didn't vote for him because of his moral stand--or lack of one.

I'm sure that every black person old enough to vote voted for Obama--including some who had never voted before. I didn't particularly want McCain either, but I won't vote for a man who is for everything I'm morally against.

If voting according to one's morals is the wrong way to do it, how DO we vote when no politician ever keeps his promises? They never accomplish anything they promise to accomplish--especially when you have congress vetoing what the president wants to do. Does it really matter who we have for president when none of them give a rat's behind about us "little people"? What I do is vote for what I consider to be the "lesser of the evils".

I've studied American history and know quite a bit about the subject matter (are you seriously suggesting that Jefferson keeping slaves was a good thing?!). Your resort to banal insults demonstrates the paucity of your argument, and your arrogance sums up all that has been wrong with the last eight years. Thank God that we have a fresh broom coming in now!

Of course I'm posting from our perspective on this side of the Pond and doubtless the views here will differ from the views over your side. I'm not 'involved' in the sense that I don't have the right to vote in your election but I'm certainly 'involved' in the sense that I very much have a stake in the outcome - as does the rest of the world - of the Presidential election of the world's only superpower which professes to be the 'leader' of the free world and, from that perspective I, along with many others over here, are rejoicing at the choice you and your fellow-US citizens made yesterday; we can all breathe a sigh of relief that the nightmare of the Bush Administration is now over and, perhaps, sleep a little easier in our beds tonight.

It is an interesting worldview in which addressing totalitarianism around the world is considered a nightmare. I guess it says a lot about values doesn't it.

No doubt many are rejoicing because they know that their totalitarianism, their lack of respect for human rights and human dignity will now go unaddressed. It is a sad thing to be sure.

A pile of socialist filth in the White House wont' do the world any good. The more socialist England became, the more international influence it lost.

    Wow, where to start...

    I'm not a Bush fan, but...just wow.

    • America had plenty to be proud of even before yesterday's results. When evil has made a move to conquer...who has been called upon? When natural disasters wreck countries around the globe...who has been called upon? It would seem to me that America has plenty to be proud of...no matter who won the election.
    • Of course, it's Great Britain's job to protect Great Britain, but as far as we go...we've not been attacked again since 9/11/01. So much for "unsafe."
    • I love the "warmongering" charge from a resident of a country who is also fighting in Iraq. Pot, meet kettle. I have not supported every war this country has undertaken. Vietnam was a disaster, and we had no plan. Korea is debatable. We apparently had bad intelligence with regards to Iraq. So, I'm not one who thinks we ought to jump into every conflict on the planet. But the "warmongering" charge, though delivered quite often, is a bit much.
    • One doesn't "atone" for slavery by voting for a black man for president. One atones for slavery by asking forgiveness, if they indeed are guilty (by the way, there are no living slave owners here. There are lots of people who need to make right their actions of prejudice and bigotry...but just because I voted for McCain doesn't mean I am one of them, nor does it mean my vote was racially motivated). One atones for slavery by voting for the best candidate for President regardless of the skin color. Many of us conservatives have in recent years offered support for many conservative African-American politicians. Of course, that went unnoticed...but now, we've suddenly "atoned."
    • It is not the responsibility of Americans to vote in a president that will please other nations. It is the responsibility of Americans to vote whom we believe will be the best person to lead our country. If others approve, fine. If they don't, then they're welcome to protest (if they're really lucky, they will have freedom of speech, as we do, and they won't get killed for voicing their opinion). Honestly, Great Britain has been a valuable ally, and I hope they're on board...but even then, we have to do what's best for us. As for other countries, such as France, I am of the opinion that if they are ticked off and begin pontificating their self-righteous drivel, we probably did something right.
Thank you, and we do have the God-mandated responsibility to pray for our president, and obey the leadership of our country, when it doesn't go against God's directives.

I'm worried about how God looks at me. The nation needs to worry about once again having allies in the world. Right now I don't think we have any with the possible exception of the UK.

I think we got a potential statesman in the mold of John F. Kennedy who will reestablish good relationships with our former allies in the world.

Matt, I can realize your perspective and appreciate it. But I fear you don't understand liberal domestic policies, or else under-play them. Recently here in the US, liberal judges passed a bill called sb777, an anti-discrimantory bill. This was passed in California. Some of it's features, in the name of protecting the transgender, homosexual, and bi-sexual community :

*Boys will be allowed to use girls bathrooms and locker rooms if they identify themselves as female.

That means that if they feel they are a woman on the inside, they can go and change in gym class with the girls.

*Sex change options offered along with sexual education
*Banning the use of 'husband' and 'wife' from all text books.

So I understand that the Bush administration was really portrayed as tyrannical for the war in Iraq, but at least under a Republican, war mongering government I know that I will be able to homeschool my kids, or send my kids to private schools that are not required to teach evolution. So there is so much more that went into this election than what was portrayed in the media.

Am I glad that there was high voter turn out? No. Because there was very unfair media coverage this entire campaign. The debates that went on, with the exception of the last televised debate, were pathetic. The issues were not discussed at all. I am for people making well informed votes, not for people voting for someone simply because they don't want another G.W. Bush

EDIT : Just wanted to add that here in the US there have also been attempts by liberals to pass 'hate speech' laws, which would restrict pastors from being able to preach against homosexuality. This is a dangerous precedent toward freedom of speech, used by liberals to move our nation in the direction of a secularized Europe.

So yes, on non-domestic issues, I can see how someone would vote Obama. But domestic issues are the most important. If freedom of speech erodes(in the form of hate speech laws) or if freedom of education is done away with in favor of mandatory state indoctrination(such as Germany), Christianity takes a large blow. Christianity is not effected by whether or not our economy prospers. It's not effected by whether or not our kids have government paid tuition for college. It is effected when the state sponsors indoctrination of kids with pluralism, multi-culturalism, femminism, evolution, post modernism. .

BTW, I have been talking to an atheist secularist about this issue, haivng a large correspondence. I think it would be illuminating to see the Democratic domestic policies defended with such consistency. If I get permission from the guy, I'll post them on my blog and you one-issue democrats can get educated about the liberal world view behind the domestic policies you support.

We have similar threats here to our freedoms. But the point is, CY, that all these measures AFAICT have happened under a Republican administration. It seems to me that these were decisions taken at judicial and state, not Federal level. States' rights and all that...Not a lot to do with whether you have a blue or a red chap in the White House, ISTM

    • I'm not denying that, but the Bush Presidency has seriously eroded international goodwill towards the US. The sooner y'all wake up and smell the coffee on this one, recognise that you're onto a good thing on that issue with Obama, and stop the "we don't care what you dang forriners think, we're the greatest country on earth so na-na-na-na-na" adolescent willy-waving (not that all here do that, but some do), the better.
    • But we have - 7/7/05 - after Bush and Blair's much-vaunted 'War on Terror' had started, including the invasion of Iraq
    • Agreed - Blair was also a warmonger. Two idiots however do not make a correct policy
    • Sure, but it certainly helps to back your words up with actions, which America has now helped to do; I accept that there are no living slave holders but there have been consequences of slavery which have persisted into living memory such as segregation and ecnominc disadvantaging of blacks, and the vote has also helped to erase those much more recent consequences of slavery - from segregation to a black President in a little more than 40 years is something about which all Americans can be justificably proud. It's proved the American dream can work for all Americans.
Fine, but if you want the rest of the world to be for you not against you then it does kind of help to have them on board just a little bit.

"I'm not denying that, but the Bush Presidency has seriously eroded international goodwill towards the US."

If that erosion is based on the type of knowledge you seem to have then ignorance might be bliss after all. The world is what it is, we do the best we can in our ignorant buffoonish way. Sorry the world judges us the way they do.

"The sooner y'all wake up and smell the coffee on this one, recognise that you're onto a good thing on that issue with Obama,"

Time will tell, but how is moving a free country to socialism a good thing - spreading the wealth around is robin hood economics that will bite somebody real quick.

"and stop the "we don't care what you dang forriners think, we're the greatest country on earth so na-na-na-na-na" adolescent willy-waving (not that all here do that, but some do), the better."

Thanks for that mature insight into our country. Love it when the world mean mouths the country that has done and done for the world for so many years and probably will continue to do so in spite of the spite that is given in thanks.

What we do is our business and you make the US a lot larger by suggesting the world really cares. If we are so terrible, drop relations with us, stop buying our product/output and isolate the jolly green giant so he doesn't hurt you so much

Is calling your leader an "idiot" in line with the attitude Scripture asks for us to have? I think not.

Hm....I've been here a while, and that's the first time I've ever heard the term "adolescent willy-waving." I learn something new every day.

I think you get this, but there is a middle ground between what you've described, and the mindset that seeks to appease the opinions of the rest of the world at all costs.

It might suprise you to know (might not...) that many of us would love nothing more than to get out of many of the foreign entanglements we've placed ourselves in. However, keep in mind that people such as Bill Clinton managed to get us wrapped up in a bunch of those situations (anyone remember Serbia? Somalia?). In other words, one party doesn't have a monopoly on that behavior.

    You said,
My thoughts are complex here. I am proud that we have put so much of the scourge of racism behind us. However, 46% of this country's voters feel that Obama was not the best person for the job. Most of them--myself included, would have had no problem whatsoever voting for an African-American whose views more closely lined up with ours.

For me to vote for what I consider to be a bad candidate for president simply to "atone" for sins that are not mine...that is irresponsible use of a sacred trust. Not if, but when a person of another ethnicity is the best person for the job, they will get my vote in a New York minute. And I'm just as proud of that fact as I am who got the presidency last night.
