Obama released a national ad saying he would "fast-track alternatives" to imported oil. On closer examination, his proposal is to spend $150 billion over the coming decade on energy research. Ten years doesn't sound all that "fast" to us, and there's no guarantee that the research will result in less oil being imported.

The "fast track" would be to produce oil from our own reserves. The longer term solution is to let the marketplace drive the innovation, energy sources, transportation options, life style, etc. that's affordable and works best. It worked to transform us from horse and buggy to trains, planes, and automobiles. It happened without the government. All the government's "alternatives" involve taxes and grants that alter the true economics of energy and make technical problems into political toys. Ethanol, wind power, etc. are examples of the foolishness on which we spent money. Nuclear electric power generation is an example of sound technology we haven't spent money on because of government intervention.
