What has made America so great over the past 200 years is often referred to as the "American Spirit!" Unfortunately, the very fabric of that spirit has been tattered and torn by the likes of those who push and teach "Tolerance" and Political Correctness"

Political Correctness and Tolerance classes being taught in the workplace and at our schools and colleges are the reason today's new Americans balk at speaking English when out in the public. In my mind, I see their disdain of speaking English and assimilating, as being a form of rebellion toward a nation they really don't love. There are even an awful lot of people ,from second, third, fourth generation American families [mostly those who call themselves liberals] who detest American values, and speak about leaving.

I say, let them go. Let Alex Baldwin, Johnny Depp, and any other Hollywood liberal leave, and take with them those immigrants who have come here to change America. Chances are they'll never come to love our great nation any ways.

However, if it is your choice to remain, than I invite you to roll back you sleeves, forget about being politically correct, and speak English when you're around those who speak English. That is what makes it much easier to assimilate and become one of us!

However, if you truly miss your countries traditions, clothing, holidays, and the day-to-day customs of your birth nation, strongly consider going back home, because, people like me, will protect our right to live and breathe American...we say to those who don't really like this country, remember the Words of our Revolutionary forefathers, "Don't Tread on Me!" While the majority of Americans seem polite and willing to let you live as you see fit, believe me, there will come the breaking point. I call it the Alamo syndrome; the line in the sand...In the end, Americans will "rise up as Americans" and fight those politically correct, tolerance preaching folks in order to preserve the American way of life.

Don't let our laid back looks, uncombed hair, and friendly smile on our face fool you. We love this country, nearly as much as we love our God, however, like a tree trunk, if the wind pushes the trunk too far, it will reach its breaking point, and in order to save the tree, it will snap back, and that is what the liberals need to watch out for.

This is America, and our with arms wide open, we eagerly welcome each and every one of our immigrant brothers and sisters. We have one rule here, if you're an American join us...and that means join us in everything. Of course, joining us in everything means speaking our excepted language, dressing like us [keeping material off your head in order to hide your eyes and face].And stop trying to change our traditions, customs and holidays, instead, enjoy the American holidays. Most importantly, we ask that you work hard and fast at assimilating, just like our fore-fathers did over the century's. This is what made us, as Americans, great!!!

Many from around the world have referred to America as a huge melting pot of ideas, cultures, customs and traditions. While some may resent being called a "melting pot", it remains true that Americans are proud of being from a melting pot nation where millions have come together and become one under the Eagle and in the God we Trust! Like the ingredients tossed in the pot to make a hearty, healthy stew, we are proud of how Americans have come together as one, united for the colors of a flag that never runs when facing a fight. Americans are a mixture of many customs and cultures, and the end product is something special. Our melting pot society has stood tall and together for over 200 hundred years, and we are proud to be a special blend of people who are willing to go any where around the world when a brother or sister nation is in need.

To be a blending that looks like an American; speaks like and American; and joins in each year on specially set days to celebrate the reason for that day.

If this is too difficult a task, then find another nation that is socially and culturally tolerant to your specific needs. Just don't forget....millions have passed by the "great Lady in the New York Bay" with the heart set purpose to "become and American". And being an American means we're ready to roll back the sleeves on our shirts and blouses, pitch in and get dirty, and hand-in-hand help build and maintain one of the greatest nations on this earth! This is what made us great than, and this is what will KEEP us great forever.

I can agree with portions of your post such as the need for immigrants to speak English and generally trying to become American. You go a little far with statements such as:

Yet further in your post you admit that adding additional pieces of culture to America is good thing:

As an immigrants son, I am proud of my mother's heritage. I'm an American first and foremost, but I love the food and cooking from my mother's home country (Latvia). My mother came through Ellis Island in the early 50's. She came to this country as a land of opportunity and she learned the language quickly. She (and her mother) worked hard to provide for themselves and live the American dream. To tell her to go back to her country because she may enjoy and miss some of the culture and traditions of her home country is absurd.

I second what Matt said, with the exception that I'm not an immigrant's son, I'm an immigrant.

I agree with Matt and Johny.

There really is no one American culture. There are regional cultures and ethnic cultures. In Baltimore there used to be a different ethnic fair each week. Different ethnic communities would bring their foods and crafts. It was a great way to sample new foods and see various types of craftwork.

    New England
    The South
    The Southwest
    The Midwest
    The Northwest

Culture is not the same from region to region.

Be as demanding in wanting others to change as you would want others to demand of you if you moved to live in another country.

Where is that rule? I thought we were all about freedom. That rule sounds more like something out of Nazi Germany.

Overall , RD, an excellent post.

Do I agree 100% on every point? No.

But overall you said it well and I won't pick at it.

    Assimilate or stay away.

100% ? No. Keep your diet. Wear whatever clothes you want. And worship however you like. But don't try to cram any of it down my throat and do't expect to get special treatment because you're different. Instead, accept equal treatment in spite of being different.

Above all. Make English your primary language and earn your own way.

OR has decided to give high school diplomas to students that have not learned English. They give them five years of English here yet some can't learn English. CA I am told get their students into English in one year.

    Thank you!!

I have been trying (midst other goings-on) to formulate a reply to this thread, but you have done a pretty darn good job.

I see more nit-picking than discussion re: the OP in this thread; almost like the PC police were just around the corner and everybody wants to make sure that they know "--Hey, I don't even know that RD guy!!!"

We need more hardliner stands that may even be way more restrictive than really desired, cause that is precisely how we've gotten to this nanny state we're in now.

In the past, the liberals (crafty lil devils:thumbs: ) would take a position so far left that even they didn't want it, but when the "COMPROMISE" came and each side was supposedly giving in a little, in truth it was only the conservatives that were yielding and the libs were getting what they wanted all along.

Just compare the liberalism of Truman to the conservatism of Bush!! Nuff said.

Therefore the OP was fine, IMHO; if not needing to be stronger!!

Gotta draw that proverbial line in the sand somewhere, sometime, and if it don't happen soon (real soon) it's gonna be too late; if it's not already!!:tear:

This is America. Love it, or get the %$#@ out. There is no reason for me, or any other American, to have to press "1" for English, or have to pay for every document and school book to be printed in umpteen different languages. English is spoken here, not Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Russian, whatever.

I have no problem with keeping the traditions of the homeland, but this ain't their homeland. I have Cherokee blood in my veins, but you don't see me toking on a peace pipe full of wacky backy or building a casino. I've also got Irish, German, Dutch, and English in me, but all of my forefathers came to America and became Americans, even dying for this nation.

Seeing all these who come here and demand we bow to their customs and crap makes my blood boil. At least those from overseas come here legally (for the vast majority). Those who come here illegally... I had best not get started on that as I might say things I ought not.

    I agree with C4k..
It sounds like some in our churches...

We will only accept you if you are like us...

I am glad Christ is not like that...

I am also glad for the phrasing on the Statue of Liberty..

Just curious... How many of you complaining about people not speaking English are willing to teach ESL classes to help them learn English...

IOWS.. are you willing to put your actions where your mouths are?
BTW.. you don't have to know the foreign language to help in ESL classes...

Or better yet.. How many of you have learned a foreign language in order to witness to someone else?

It amazes me of all the people that ONLY knows English complaining about immigrants.. when a lot of the immigrants are able to speak more than one language.. some many languages....

This thread is so full of American Pride it is sickening to me..

We are citizens of HEaven first and foremost..
And God accepts worship in any language.

Some of the most powerful services i have been in lately are services where I have worshipped in both Spanish and English...

And unless you have experienced this.. you are missing a blessing...

I used to think the way many have.. until God changed my mind, and showed me that I was being sinful by putting my American citizenship ahead of my Heavenly citizenship.
