We not only have a drum set at church but it was Liberty DeVitto's set! He was the long time drummer for Billy Joel and was also on our worship team for a while. So that's doubly sinful!

Are there any musical forms that you would classify as riotous or excessive? If so, which ones? If not, why not?

    Aaron,

You are evading the question. Thats not the point. You have been argueing that certain beats, rythmns and forms of music are inherently evil. You have NOT been saying that they are evil when used RIOTOUSLY or EXCESSIVELY...but are acceptable when employed in moderation.

No, you have been saying that certain beats, rythmns and musical forms are evil...period. Whether the music is secular or christian has no bearing on it, according to what you have been saying.

So, with that in mind, I'm sure you are a "sola scriptura" guy as I am, and you wouldnt dream of going beyond the scriptures, so...please tell us.

Which beats and musical forms do the scriptures clearly identify as "good" for us to use, and which ones do the scriptures clearly identify as "evil"?

    Looking forward to your response,

    Mike

No I'm not. Your question was, and I quote: "And I'm still waiting for you or someone else to show me...from the scriptures...what beats, rythmns and musical forms the scriptures clearly identify as evil, and which the scriptures clearly identify as good."

So I ask again, are there any musical forms that you would regard as riotous or excessive?

A style by definition is how one arranges and employs the individual elements. If you'll look at my argument again, I think you'll find that I said a musical piece is to be experienced as a whole, not in its individual elements one at a time.

So, with that in mind, please indulge me at least this far. Are there any forms like Goth or Grunge that you would classify as riotous or excessive?

    I doubt that.

Whoa! I can't believe the amount of scripture flying back and forth here!

I grew up in the rock is evil camp and went for one semester to such a college.
I studied it at length in college and you know what?
I could NOT prove my point from scripture.
I looked everywhere but it was NOT THERE.

Placing scientific studies above the word of God like this is idolatry!

And just when you think you have it all right in your worship because you follow the sientific evidence: check out this:
If is from a book call Amos, which happens to be in the Bible:

Though Tim might have meant this in jest, I want to point out something. He's exactly right, but I doubt for the reasons that I would give.

Opera requires an exceptionally high degree of musical expertise. The work required to keep an operatic voice in condition is phenomenal, and few truly appreciate how much skill it takes to truly perform an opera. Robert Preston might sing-song his way through Meredith Wilson's, The Music Man, but you'd never have seen him cast in The Marriage of Figaro.

But, though I would tend to say that in general, opera is a sublime art, when compared to something as profane as Jesus Christ, Superstar, it is an excessive form of music, and something that appeals more to the pride of men and their desire for exhibitionsim.

Billy Joel was born in the wrong decade. Could you imagine all the hits he would have had in the late '50's/early '60's? Songs like "uptown girl," "for the longest time," etc....he would have been an even bigger star.

You're probably right but of course, around here, he did quite well. :) I still really like his style.

    John Gill comments:

"Likewise it is not any clamor of the tongue; or every sound of the voice, that is to be accounted singing, but an harmonious, melodious and musical sound of it; otherwise; why should the tuneful and warbling notes and strains of birds be called singing, any more than the grunting of a hog, the braying of an ass, the neighing of a horse, the barking of a dog, or the roaring of a lion." http://www.pbministries.org/books/gill/Sermons&Tracts/sermon_54.htm

I've been trying to get an answer to those questions for years. They know the implications of giving an answer.

I've said before "so anything goes?" To which they reply either "I didn't say that" or "it's not for me to judge". So, I guess anything goes, and those of us that believe in judging righteous judgement and trying the spirits whether they are of God are just wasting our time.

I think I'll wear nothing but underwear to church this week and demand a verse of scripture which says I can't do it. And when they throw me out it'll prove that they are all pharisees that don't really go by the Bible.

Please, don't wear just your underwear to church. We'd hate to have to toss you for your anything goes attitude.

Does that mean that you will now answer Aaron's questions?

"Are there any musical forms that you would classify as riotous or excessive? If so, which ones? If not, why not?"

RBell, am I wrong, or does your hermeneutic indeed inform you that anything that the Bible does not specifically forbid is permissable, or even righteous if done in the name of God?

I believe it is the message of the music that is riotous or excessive. Now...one must be wise in the presentation of the message. When I do a program for our senior adult group, the message is the same if I use our Wed. night songs or songs that our Sr. Adults know and love...but in order to not be a stumbling block to them, I use the latter. Why? Because it's not worth offending them in the course of presenting the message.
