Would it make sense to have something like that for either Nasb/Niv?

I believe the Amplified is the ASV1901 with other renderings and understandings in the parenthesized amplifications.

I did not know that it is based off the 1901 ASV!

is it basically putting in margins of text the alternate renderings/explainings of the words etc?

I have found it useful. By putting in synonyms, especially for words that cannot be translated with one word, I believe a better understanding of what is mean can be determined.

It's good for helping you understand certain points of a passage. I would however not recommended it for your reading through the Bible as it would take longer. :D

No, the alternate words are in the text, which makes it quite annoying to read. You can find it on biblegateway.com.
