I would wager that you cannot find many, and when you do, prepare to shell out a pretty penny for a company that makes their own paper, ink, etc., and uses their own factories, trucks, stores, etc. Oh, and refine their own gas, grow their own food...

Npet, your position pretty much mirrors mine on bible versions. You'll rarely see me quote from anything but the old KJ. I'm not a Ruckmanite, but I am very wary of "Alexandrian" influence, Origen, and Westcott and Hort.

More than likely, any Bible you buy will have been printed by one of a handful of large volume printers. They will print anything. I have seen pallets of Bibles in the same plant where Madonna's racy book was being printed.

If you want a Bible where Murdoch or someone like Murdoch isn't making money... then you'll probably have to print your own.

They will print anything. I have seen pallets of Bibles

And I understand that KJVs are moved by the same Parcel
handling companies that move porn about.

Zondervan (owned by Murdoch's New Corp.) is the source of the
last bound KJV that I bought. If being touched by Murdoch's
hands contaminates the NIV, then it contaminates my KJV1769 also.

Npetreley: //Does anyone know of a good translation that is word-for-word
when it is appropriate, and meaning-for-meaning when the meaning
would get lost if you simply translated it word-for-word?//

HCSB = Christian Standard Bible (Holman, 2003)!!!

    Formal Equivalence -- word-for-word' translation
    Dynamic Equivalence -- thought-for-thought translation

From 'Translation Philosophy' in many HCSBs:

"Optimal Equivalence: This approach seeks to combine the best features
    of both formal and dynamic equivalence. .. The HCSB{copyright symbol}
has chosen to use the balance and beauth of optimal
equivalence for a frewh transltation of God's word that is both faithful
to the words God inspired and 'user friendly' to modern readers."

J.D. "You'll rarely see me quote from anything but the old KJ."

I've been critizized on the BB (Baptist Board) for posting
from the actual KJV1611 Edition (not to be confused with the
normal 'old KJ', the KJV1769 Edition).

I agree with this a lot, although I do consider other things.
I read other versions on occasion, but find myself very comfortable with the KJV. I'm very UNcomfortable in a church setting where it is not used.
I have gotten to where I do have a bit of interest in other translations though. I do cringe internally when I hear people present the TR/Mas as more corrupted, less trust-worthy than the Alexandrian texts and such.

Then I must conclude that you are not very informed on slavery. Perhaps you cold find a copy of Frederick Douglass' slave narrative or something of the like.

After reading that, it would be impossible for anyone to say that porn is worse than slavery, since slavery itself included live porn.

So all Satan has to do is have someone wicked print every Bible version and you would stop buying them? This is absolutely unbelievable.

You seem to have some balance there. Like esiderioDomini said, the NASB, KJV, NKJV are the most word-for-word or what's better referred to as "formal equivalent" (FE) popular Bibles out there. The NASB is probably even more "literal" than the KJV. Perhaps not so much except that it simply does a better job of translating the Greek/Hebrew into English.

As you acknowledged, sometimes a meaning-based (MB) translation is actually more accurate. Even the most FE translations will be MB more often than you might think. What you have to ask is if the impact is the same as it was when it was first written and if the intended meaning is being communicated in English.

But in general it is a good idea to have a few MB translations to use alongside your FE translation(s) to help understand. I like the HCSB personally.
