Were both suppossed to be updated version of old RSV?

Do they use the same texts in traslating? same theory of translating?

Yes to all three questions, with a difference in approach to the matter of gender.

So would both be considered to be good as study bible versions then?
Think when my pastor went o get his Phd in NT theology that almost ALL of the profs used NRSV over in Europe!

Yes, the NRSV is considered the Bible of academics.

But the NRSV is not normally the Bible of choice for the average evangelical church, esp. Baptists.

What Bible was your pastor preaching from before he left for Europe?
