Question: "Are Christians guilty of hate speech?"

Answer: A working definition of hate speech is "speech that is intended to insult, intimidate, or cause prejudice against a person or people based on their race, gender, age, sexual orientation, political affiliation, occupation, disability, or physical appearance." If that is the accepted definition, a Christian should never participate in hate speech. However, the problem is that the definition of hate speech is broadening over time. Proclaiming that a certain belief is wrong or that a certain activity is sinful, based on biblical principles, is increasingly being included in the definition of hate speech.

Ephesians 4:15 refers to "speaking the truth in love." First Peter 3:15 instructs Christians to defend their faith, but to do so "with gentleness and respect." Colossians 4:6 proclaims, "Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt." Sadly, some Christians fail to follow these biblical instructions. Some Christians (or at least people who claim to be Christians) speak the truth, but speak it in such a way that it is very hateful. One prominent example would be Westboro Baptist Church and its "God hates fags" slogan. Westboro Baptist Church is correct in declaring the Bible's teaching that homosexuality is sinful, but they are declaring this truth in such a way that it is intended to be incendiary, offensive, and hurtful. Needless to say, the Bible does not support such methods.

It is likely that in the near future, governments will begin declaring more speech as hate speech, thereby making it illegal. In some parts of the world, it is illegal to say that homosexuality is a sin. In some countries, it is illegal to declare one religion right and other religions wrong. This steady broadening of what qualifies as hate speech could eventually lead to any effort to evangelize being declared hate speech, since it would be "hateful" to tell a person that what he/she currently believes is incorrect.

What the perpetrators of this expanded hate speech definition fail to realize (or admit) is that to tell someone the truth is an act of love, not hate. Is it hateful for a teacher to tell a student that his/her answer is wrong? Is it hateful for a building inspector to tell a construction company that they are building on a faulty foundation? Of course, the answer to these questions is no. However, that is precisely the illogic that is being applied to current hate speech legislation. Telling someone that his/her religious views are wrong is somehow hateful. Telling someone that his/her lifestyle is immoral is somehow hateful. The logic is not, in any sense, consistent with how truth is determined in other areas of society.

At GotQuestions.org, our goal is to speak the truth in love. We do not hate Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Catholics, Mormons, or Jehovah's Witnesses. Rather, we simply believe that these groups are making some serious theological and biblical errors. We do not hate homosexuals, adulterers, pornographers, transsexuals, or fornicators. Rather, we simply believe that those who commit such acts are making immoral and ungodly decisions. Telling someone that he/she is in the wrong is not hateful. In reality, refusing to tell someone the truth is what is truly hateful. Declaring the speaking of truth, presented respectfully, to be hate speech, is, in fact, the ultimate demonstration of hate.

People who disagree with you are not automatically guilty of hate speech.

You posted it in a thread that had absolutely nothing to do with it - and posted it because people disagreed with you.

    Aren't we sneaky?

Touchy .... are you kidding me? If you are really who you say your are and you are not a troll - then you, Edie, are the MOST "touchiest" person I have seen on the Baptist Board in 12 years. There's not even a close second to you.

Sister, this is my last post to you. I tried .... I really did. I have prayed for you. I have worried about you. But I've got to shake the dust off my feet.

You are not telling the truth. The "TRUTH" you claim you are. The "TRUTH" you claim God has "inspired" you to write and "share" with everyone.

You copied and pasted this article from gotquestions.org to insult and incite. There is no other reason.

You are stirring discord and you love it. You get some kind of sick jollies out of it.

You have called people unsaved here - MERELY because they disagree with you. How ridiculous. You post your "articles" under the debate forum, but you CANNOT debate anyone and balk and whine when someone challenges something you say.

The ONLY reason that I have a small shred of belief that you are for real is because I have visited your Facebook page - the one you invited me to. Other than that, I would have marked you off as a troll a long time ago.

Yes, you have very handsome boys and I hope they are a blessing to you and you to them.

But I can't seem to find all the droves of people "following you" and saying what a brilliant and inspirational author you are. Are you not telling the "TRUTH" about that either?

Please start over with us here. Please stay and make friends. Please back off with the hyper-sensitivity that pushes away people that could be your friends. And please stop telling that we are not saved be we don't agree with you. Please stop telling us what a genius you are and how we should not be jealous of your special knowledge.

I feel for you because there has been some obvious pain in your life - someone has treated you badly.

Well, guess what. I've had tragic pain in my life, too - I was sexually molested as a child. Everyone else here has pain, too. But allowing pain to make you hyper-"touchy" around people who are just trying to understand you is allowing pain to control you. I've been there - ready to bare my teeth to ANYONE who dared tell me I was wrong about something.

I just ask you to take a break and take a breath and come back and start over. Otherwise, I'm done.

Scarlett like many one here, those on my fb page are either too afraid to stand up for TRUTH so they tell me privately through phone or messaging. Or they are friends from school and my past who read and enjoy what I wrote MANY say so (I can find them if you want the messages) plus they keep showing up on top of my list..meaning they are reading. And many aren't even saved

Like I said in my new thread NARROW and FEW are those who have TRUTH...I have many friends saved and not saved and I never push my beliefs on them in person and in our relationships...I am a friendly to all and help all, but not all are friends...it takes special people to be my friend.

Those who are end up being the REAL DEAL.

Is this person just allowed to spam the board with her hatefulness??

There is no possibility of intelligent conversation with her.

So if I say a person is sinful by practicing homosexuality, if I say a mother should stay home and raise her children, if I say that Black churches have a much more "spirited" service, If I say that a young man should not be a Deacon, if I say that Democrats support baby killers, if I say that a Christian is wrong for working at a brewery, if I say a man in a wheelchair- should not ref a basketball game -
Am I guilty of hate speech- ? Or am I simply giving truth?

Call me what you want - just don't call me late for supper

people are too sensitive these days.
My goodness a man can get it trouble for saying a female is attractive.
    Lets worry about important things.

SCARLET, if you notice the top people on my list are PASTORS, and other RESPECTED leaders and business owners in our and others community. I always said QUALITY over QUANTITY.

One of the families that does post and agree with me a lot...and like I said many do privately, just like on here.

Is a WELL RESPECTED family in this community since the 40's. This family is Godly and are actively so, so are all their kids... they do so much to live and preach Christ...I am very impressed with them. They wouldn't be close to me and allow me in their home every week, if I wasn't "up to par"...especially when it comes to their KIDS THAT I HAVE SEEN THEM PROTECT SO, even those in their 20's...some of my best friendships have been from homeschooling family if not all 4 of them......We have much in common and it started with their kids at volley ball for the last year or more. I should have been born into (although I'm closer to their parents age) this family, as I was these kids (7 home schooled, from 16 to 32) at their age....they too are in the 1%....They know and see the real me, they have commented personally on my heart, heart for God and others. On my gifts and talents for they appreciate them and they aspire...It is nice to ASPIRE and to INSPIRE as well.

Those are the people I want in my life...authentic and real.

So if those who like me and actually show it are the FEW...then AMEN to that!
