I have had a very interesting discussion about apostles and disciples of today.
Are they different today then when the twelve and Paul walked the earth way back when? How? And, If there are apostles today and they are different....then how come or can we call then apostles? Same question goes with disciples today. BTW, I am also wondering about the gifts they worked in too as to making them different today also.

*(definitions out of the Webster dictionary)
apostle- a person sent forth~ 1. any of the 12 disciples sent out by Jesus to teach the gosple. 2. a prson sent out on a special mission or as a preacher. 3. any early Christian missionary or leader. 4. an early advocate or leader of a new reform movement 5. any of the 12 administrative officals of the Mormon Church

disciple- 1. a pupil or follower of any teacher or school. 2. an early follower of Jesus, especially an Apostle.

*(defined out of the Strongs bible dictionary)
    apostle- commissioner of Christ

disciple- to become a student ~ pupil, student ~ female pupil, student

Bear in mind what John wrote about the apostles in his Revelation:

    Rev 21:14
14 And the wall of the city had twelve foundation stones, and on them were the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
    NASU

This would appear to limit the number of apostles somewhat, in my humble opinion.

M4H, I don't think the apostles, of today, are any different...that is if they go by the same teachings that was given by the Lord.

    Ephesians 4:11-12

    11) And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
    12) For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministery, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

Ummm...at least that's an answer to part of your question. [IMG]

Yes there are Apostles today. It is said by some denominations that they are the people that start new churches.

And of course I believe that we are all disciples of Christ as we learn His word.

Then as we grow, and learn, God lets us know what job He wants us to do for Him. Whether it be witnessing, or preaching or building more churches.

When we are mature Christians, then I think some of us become Apostles.

(JMHO so no need to start fighting now) Lets be nice!!

    Working for Jesus,

    Tam,

    Paul of Eugene,
Yes, that was the twelve apostles of the Lamb, but what about the apostles that Mee brought up in Eph 4:11? Why was an office for apostles mentioned there if apostles wasn't for today? Paul later became an Apostle and was not one of the twelve.

    [IMG] Thanks Mee~
Well thats what I was thinking.

According also to the definitions, Apostles are sent out on special missions or to preach....(missionary work maybe?) Disciples are students, like some of us who are learning of Jesus and His ways. The disciples who later became the apostles of Jesus Christ did many works through the power of Holy Ghost. So then why not the disciples and apostles of today, what would make it so wrong (scripturally) if they did the same healing, miracles,.....ect under the unction of the Holy Ghost? [IMG]
