Acts 17:11: These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

There are many false teachers and preachers who claim to preach and teach Biblically. Do you "search the scriptures" daily to discern whether or not the teaching and preaching you hear or read lines up with the Bible? Or do you simply "check your mind at the door, and allow somebody else do your thinking for you"?

I certainly try to be. I take extensive notes and write down all scripture references so I can read all of them later.

That was our theme verse at my last church in Hawaii and we had a banner hanging up with that verse. Good verse...

One of my fantasy football's team name is the Noble Bereans.

Yes, I posted in my introductory posting that we should all be as the Bereans.

Very good point brought up here Linda....

Let me first state, I thank God for the many good preachers and teachers God has brought into my life. They have helped me grow in my walk with the Lord.

But with saying that I must add that I have come to realize a few things also.

    1. That all these people , (like myself) are human and therefore subject to make mistakes. Therefore I have found it imparative to check out everything with the only ABSOLUTE TRUTHS which we have (God's Word)

    2. Secondly after close study what will transpire when I stand before the Lord, I find that I will have to give account for my building upon the foundation which Christ layed. (I Cor. 3:11-16). If I understand the Scriptures correctly, I will not be able to use the excuse, "well thats what so-in-so taught me.". For I believe Christ will quickly bring my attention to passages such as I John 4:1 and inform me of His admonishment to me about my responsibilities.

yes I think it behoves us to be Bibical Bereans. Even those Bereans were young in the Lord, they were wise in wisdom, and believe we need to learn from them.

Actually, I was lead to the Lord by a pastor of a Berean church. There is a group of independent Bible churches in the midwest "Berean Fundamental Churchs" so I was introduced to the concept way early and it stuck very well [IMG]

I certianly do my best to search out the scriptures in each and every area of my life.

I am sure that I fall far short of being a perfect Berean though.

I tell you I struggle with my daily reading. I tend to find more things that try to take up my time or are more interesting to read. I have been convicted by the Spirit to maintain a balance in my studies. I enjoy reading commentaries; I enjoy books of religious discussion; I enjoy books that motivate a change or highlight a strength/weakness in my life; I enjoy reading boks that tell me more about the Bible...but I need to balance this more with reading more of the Bible and be more open to let the Holy Spirit translate and explain it to me instead of another man's opinion or research. So I encourage you all to continue with your studies and pray that I may be found faithful and balanced in mine.

As a Marine I've been taught to develop a plan so when I do my personal Bible Reading I don't have any other books open to distract except a notebook to jot things down so anything intersting gets noted. Then later in the day, if I have time I'll review my notes and do the more indepth studying. Then before I go to bed my wife and I (instead of watching Tv) we each spend about an hour reading next to each otehr in bed. this is my time for personal reading.

Ps. I'm currently reading "Homiletics from the Heart" by Dr. Goestch...great book!

Sadly I know people who claim to be Bereans who:

    Acts 17:11:
These were more noble than those in Thessalonica,
in that they received the word with all readiness of mind,
and searched the scripture daily, whether those things were so.

I like to read different scriptures
plural in different versions to get the
    feel of the message.

    Acts 17:11 (Geneva Bible, 1587):
These were also more noble men then they which were at Thessalonica,
which receiued the woorde with all readinesse,
and searched the Scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

    Acts 17:11 (KJV1611 Edition):
These were more noble then those in Thessalonica,
in that they receiued the word with all readinesse of minde,
and searched the Scriptures dayly, whether those things were so.

I see the KJV1769 has dropped the dignity given the scripture
comparted to the KJV1611 which called it Scripture.

I see that the Geneva Bible translates a Greek term noble men
while the KJV probably includes females in their ranks [IMG]
    with noble

    From Strongs:

    G2104
    εὐγένης
    eugenēs
    yoog-en'-ace
From G2095 and G1096; well born,
that is, (literally) high in rank,
    or (figuratively) generous:
    - more noble, nobleman.

Yes I do daily "search the Scriptures." (4-5 hours)But I'm also sure that I fall short of being a good Berean.

I do search the scripture daily, as I study to understand what I read daily. I as well, check what is preached in our church. As an Associate Pastor both my Pastor and myself have discussed the fact that we are human and can err, therefore we check each other and encourage our congregation to do the same.

I tell my people (I am a pastor) over and over again. "God holds me accountable for what I feed you. He holds you accountable for what you swallow!"

yeh. Some people might as well sing that old hymn to their pastor,

What he feeds me, I will swallow
What he feeds me, I will swallow
What he feeds me, I will swallow
I will swallow, swallow, all the way!

The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed: Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock. And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away. (1 Peter 5:1-4)

Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you. (Hebrews 13:17)

A pastor is more accountable for teaching correct doctrine--the sheep need to be fed the right diet in order that they will grow and mature.

We are to be Biblical Bereans and check out what we are being fed by our pastors and teachers.

    Yes.

It is so important to know the Scriptures and I love the time I spend reading/studying Gods Word.

    Blessings
