The number one chicken killer around here are wild dogs. People just lose track of the puppies, they gang up, and roam through the area. They can cover miles a day, and have no natural fear of Man. They can also kill smaller livestock like sheep and calves. Goats are a little better at defending themselves. Chickens also need cover from hawks. Once the hawks spot them, they'll stalk them for the best opportunity. They tend to go for the younger, less experienced hens. A rooster or two can help fend them off.

Ever heard of Kung Pow chicken, tiny tim?

Just kidding! Seriously, if you're able to do your own butchering, chickens are an easy and cheap source of protein. They can be pretty entertaining as well. Not the brightest creatures on the planet, but some really do have personality, especially the roosters.

I think if we want chickens to keep us safe, we need Kung Fu Chickens that go Pow.

    But of course:
SKUD = Suculant KFC* 'Ungry** Defeater

    * note KFC (TM) = Kentucky Fried Chicken (TM)
** note: 'ungry = hungry, u-no, need to eat

Ed notes that in the year 1400AD some 1,000,000 (one million)
Native Americans lived in the area of North America
now occupiled by the USofA. These Native American
    people lived OFF THE LAND.
So not all 320 Million of us will ever be living 'off the land'
    -- only 3 out of 1,000 ( or 1/3 of 1%).

All joking aside...it's not a bad idea to have a plan in place. My hubby and I have talked about what we would do in case of a true emergency. We have plans based on us being together when it happens, and we have plans if we are separated when it happens. Naturally, I'm responsible for rounding up the kids either way. At least we have plans, though!

    Plans are good.

The best plans are in synch with the
    emergency planning agencys (if any).

That kind of gets me wondering...why didn't the Emergency Broadcast System go off on 9/11/01? I know I had my TV on that morning, and I don't remember it going off at all. In fact, I don't think the've even tested it since then. It's has been years since I heard that annoying beeeeepppp, beeepppp, beeeeepppp.

    love,

Sounds like its time you sent a soil sample to the lab. There must be something wrong with your dirt!

Maybe because you're in North Carolina? I'm 30 miles from Ground Zero and we certainly heard the EBS go off that day AND I've heard it every couple of weeks since then.

Oh we hear it a lot in Oklahoma... especially in the spring and early summer. We don't have to worry much about bombs or the such, just TORNADOS. Do you know what we do when a tornado is coming? We go to the center most part of our home on the lower level, in a room preferably without windows (closet). We assume "the position." The position is to squat with your head tucked between your legs. Pull down hard on your head with your hands until you can kiss your butt goodbye. :)

 I'm in the panhandle of Texas, so I know this position also. We actually had one hit about 14 miles east of us last April, and it took out the main power switch for the area. We had no clue what was going on until the next morning because we don't have a battery operated radio or anything. I'm thinking we might need to get one before the next tornado season!

Mine is tested every Tuesday at 11:30AM.
Once a month on the same day, the AMBER alert
system is tested. The local tornado alert is
tested Friday at noon, unless the weather is bad.
Since the 3 May 1999 Tornado, there is a siren
every two miles - every direction throughout
    the Oklahoma City Metro area.

You can get a cheap weather radio from Radio Shack, and even better ones for about the same cost online. I got one when I was in Missouri, and although it never saved my life (nothing ever hit), I was very grateful for it. The one I have now is rechargable and also runs on batteries if the charge wears out.

When I was in MO, I did see funnel clouds and even saw a funnel cloud form right above my head (that was pretty scary).
