At fair, the grass is blue

Bands offer state's traditional music to a new generation

    Thomas Goldsmith, Staff Writer

RALEIGH - North Carolina's long and storied connection with bluegrass music is getting an appropriate tribute at the State Fair this year.

The Wells Family, a rising family band from Johnston County, and Kenny and Amanda Smith, an award-winning touring act, are both here for the duration of the fair, each offering three free shows a day. They are part of a tradition of bluegrass and old-time country music in North Carolina that dates to the beginnings of commercial radio and records in the 1920s.

Ken, the NC state fair in Raleigh is awesome. Are you there this year? I have been to GA, SC, NY, and TN state fairs and NC beats them all.

I live to far away to get there most years but if you can make it go.
