    What makes a bad Church?

Before you say that church is not teaching the truth don't go to it, what would that church have to teach.

to me two biggies are works for salvation & Christ Godship.

The first thing I look for in a church is the place of Christ in the sermon. If little is made of the magnitude of Him, then I surely won't find much of anything else either.

I can live with some doctrinal dfferences, but there is no compromise on the Lord Jesus Christ.

And no drums!!! It seems to be a disease in modern churches to have drums, and I generally walk out when the drums come in. I would rather go to the local liberal church and quietly worship the Lord.

    Cheers,

    Jim

    From experience ---

    A place of worship which:
    </font>
    • Opens the Bible at the beginning
of the sermon, then forgets about it,
in preference for the speaker's own
      words</font>
    • Tells its people that others have a
      "lesser gospel"</font>
    • Tells the people if they leave, they will
have to go backwards to a "lesser gospel"</font>
    • Believes it has cornered the Truth</font>
    • Uses extrabiblical rules as the litmus
test for whether or not the people are realy
      believers</font>
    • Is really a dictatorship</font>
    • Sees their own literature as the final
say, over and above the Bible</font>
    • Discourages people from using any
materials other than their own in personal
      studies</font>
    • Discourages education</font>
    • Is dead and does not have the common
      sense to lie down</font>
Other things that make a bad church are:
    </font>
    • One in which the Bible is not used</font>
    • They are lukewarm toward our God</font>
    • Invite any and all in, no matter what
      their doctrine</font>
    • Simply are not serious about our God</font>

A "lesser gospel" was a term they used in order
to put other churches and their beliefs down,
and, thereby, to raise themselves up. "They
know/have less than WE do." Another thing they
liked to say was, "But WE have the WHOLE truth!"

We were warned that if we left, we would go to
Hell and take our children with us. I was told,
"I have never seen anyone succeed after leaving
our church," "They always go down-hill," "They
end up divorced, and their children all get in
trouble," "They end up going from church to
church, never finding what they want," "They
seek for what tickles their ears." My husband
was told, "They think they have found freedom."
My daughter was told, "They always end up un-
happy, then they want to come back, but they
    cannot."

A bad church? I think that Jesus said it best when he said that he would spew a "lukewarm" church out of his mouth.

So I'll have to vote for Lukewarm as being the criteria for a bad church.

    Rose --

It is a pity, but it sounds like too many churches.

John's use of the term "Christ Godship", needs some explanation. Is he saying that the teaching of the diety of our Lord Jesus Christ is wrong?

It is the diety of our Lord Jesus Christ which is central to our faith, fully God incarnate, the Word who is God, and the Word who was made flesh and dwelt among us, the full and complete propitiation for our sin, born of a virgin, sacrificed on Calvary, buried and then resurrected after the third day, ascended to the right hand of the Father, the only mediator between God and man, and who will return for His Bride, and will set foot upon the Mount of Olives, and will rule for a thousand years from the throne of David, and at whose Bema judgement seat the works of the believer are judged and tested in the fire.

    II. Who is God?

    A. God

    1. Deuteronomy 6:4 "Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one!
    2. John 17:3 "And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and
Jesus Christ whom You have sent.
    3. 1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man
    Christ Jesus,
    4. Isaiah 43:10 "You are My witnesses," says the LORD, "And My servant whom I have
chosen, That you may know and believe Me, And understand that I am He. Before Me
there was no God formed, Nor shall there be after Me.
    5. Jude 1:25 To God our Savior, Who alone is wise, Be glory and majesty, Dominion and
power, Both now and forever. Amen.

    B. Jesus

    1. 1 John 5:20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an
understanding, that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His
Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.
    2. Hebrews 1:8 But to the Son He says: "Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A
scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your Kingdom.
    3. Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall
be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty
God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

    XIX. Is Jesus Yahweh (Jehovah)?

    A. Jeremiah 23:5-6 "Behold, the days are coming," says the LORD (Yahweh), "That I will
raise to David a Branch of righteousness; A King shall reign and prosper, And execute
judgment and righteousness in the earth. 6 In His days Judah will be saved, And Israel
will dwell safely; Now this is His name by which He will be called: THE LORD (Yahweh)
    OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.

XX. Is Jesus God with us?

    A. Isaiah 7:14 "Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall
conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel (Immanuw'el,
im-maw-noo-ale'; from H5973 and H410 with suff. pron. ins.; with us (is) God) Strong’s.

XXI. Was God manifest in the flesh?

    A. 1 Timothy 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was
manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles,
believed on in the world, received up into glory.

    Dear Brother John;

I just breathed a sigh of relief, for I was concerned that in your initial post that works AND Christ Godship were two biggies that you considered wrong. I evidently misunderstood and I apologise.

I am in agreement that a chuch which teaches works for salvation is wrong, and if a church does not teach the Godship of our Lord Jesus then they would be wrong as well.

    May God bless.

    A servant of Christ,
    Drew

That's what I'd like to know. One man's "Hot" is another man's "warm". I'd prefer not to just label a church. We do plenty of that already: liberal, apostate, lukewarm, legalistic, arminian, the list goes on and on. Typically we don't sticka label on what really is, but on what we don't like. It's an attempt to put the emphasis on the label we've applied to a church rather than the church.
