baptism for the dead - What is your view?

    I have been reading a discussion the "baptism for the dead" found in 1 Corinthians 15.

    Having here placed some questions it is followed by the verse within context of the passage.

    The questions:

    1. Do you consider the "baptism for the dead" as:
    > a picture of the believer's former life being buried,
    > a picture of the sufferings being washed,
    > a customary practice of believers being baptized for the dead believers who had not had a chance to be baptized before they died,
    > an expression of the believers being covered over by sufferings and calamities,
    > an expression of the dead having hope in the resurrection,
    > (suggest what your view might be and why).​

    2. Do the Mormon's use this verse as proof for their ancestral baptizing?

    3. Do you know any assemblies that actually "baptize for the dead" in our present time?

    4. What would you do if someone came to the assembly and asked for this baptism be done for a dead relative or friend?

    Here is the verse (underlined) in context.

    1Co 15:20-57

    But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the first fruits of them that slept. For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

    But every man in his own order: Christ the first fruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming. Then comes the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power.

    For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet. The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death. For he hath put all things under his feet. But when he says all things are put under him, it is manifest that he is excepted, which did put all things under him. And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all. Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead?

    And why stand we in jeopardy every hour? I protest by your rejoicing which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily. If after the manner of men I have fought with beasts at Ephesus, what advantages it me, if the dead rise not? let us eat and drink; for tomorrow we die.

    Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners. Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame.

    But some man will say, How are the dead raised up? and with what body do they come?

    Thou fool, that which thou sows is not quickened, except it die: And that which thou sows, thou sows not that body that shall be, but bare grain, it may chance of wheat, or of some other grain: But God gives it a body as it hath pleased him, and to every seed his own body.

    All flesh is not the same flesh: but there is one kind of flesh of men, another flesh of beasts, another of fishes, and another of birds. There are also celestial bodies, and bodies terrestrial: but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another. There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars: for one star differs from another star in glory.

    So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption: It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power: It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.

    And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.

    Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual.

    The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven. As is the earthy, such are they also that are earthy: and as is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly. And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly.

    Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.

    I think Paul is saying that if Christ is dead, why be baptized in His name? What good would it do? Paul goes on to say why even risk his own life for the cause of Christ if He is dead? What's the point?


    That's my uneducated opinion. :tongue3:

    This practice is nowhere else mentioned in the N.T. and is contradicted by most of the rest of scripture. It seems most likely that Paul was referring to some kind of cultic practice in the region, that would have been so familiar to the Corintiians that he had no need to explain it. The example of this cultic practice was being used to demonstrate the reality of the resurrection.

    Right, if the dead don't rise (stay in the grave) then when folks are baptized they should be left underwater to fulfil the imagery of baptism minus the resurrection.

    My opinon was the same as Amy's, but what I'd read of in the Church Fathers, who were closer in time and region, appears to be more like Zenas' opinion.
