Just doing some number crunching for a SS lesson on evangelism, and got these stats from the North American Mission Board. Looks like in the SBC, which had a total of 405,111 baptisms in 2002, it took 38 church members to reach 1 person for Christ. That figures out to be 10 baptisms a year for each SBC church, or less than one a month.

How are other Baptist groups doing, and what do you think these stats are telling us?

It tells us that people are not sharing their faith in Jesus with people around them.

You can witness to a person but you can't make them get saved. Then if they do get saved you can't make them get baptized and become a member of your church. Some are saved and join churches close to them, churches of their choice.
We have a lot of salvations from our work that don't show up in church baptisms. Such as the migrant ministry, and jail ministry.

It means that there are not that many baptisms in the SBC. Nothing more. Nothing less.

We're talking about baptism in one part of Christianity. How many people were saved? How faithful were we in proclaiming the message?

BTW, how much did Paul emphasize the numbers HE baptized?

Respectfully, most churches only have two indicators of how they are doing in Kingdom work. 1st, baptism/membership stats, and 2nd, giving records. This does not mean that those numbers tell the whole story. They don't. But I think they do tell us something. We don't serve the numbers, but the Lord. I just thought it was interesting to see those numbers, and I my first thought was, "there is much work to be done."

My church* baptrized 112 in 2003
    and has 508 resident members.
In my church each 4.5 of us
    win one each year.

*the church i'm a member of.
actually the church belongs to Jesus,
i claim it as "mine" because i work
    and worship there.
