    I know many baptist churches that use it.

    And why? For the same reasons you might recite your church's statement of faith.

    Since Baptists have "confessions of faith" and are NOT creedal people, I, too wonder about their use.

    I have pastored 33+ years and until this past year I have never heard ANY creed recited in a service. In the Free church I am interim (for a coupla more months) they read the Nicene creed once. Never in a Baptist church.

    Do only liberal, liturgical, non-US churches use them? Don't know and do not really think there is a tie-in. Much of it is just the heritage of the church, the practice of that group or fellowship. Nothing "evil" per se about using it.

    Just not standard fare for ifb'ers for certain sure! :eek:

    I can't say how common reciting the Apostles Creed is, although I must admit that it has been rare in my personal experience.

    I suspect that liturgical churches are far more likely to use it, but I have found independent Reformed, Southern Baptist, Cooperative Baptist Fellowship and Baptists of other stripes endorsing it.

    It is usually modified to clarify or delete "descended into hell" and to clarify the "holy catholic church."

    For reasons I don't fully understand, these days "liberal" baptist church and "liturgical" baptist church are almost synonymous. Since reciting the Apostles Creed is more common among liturgical baptists, I would assume it is also more common among liberal ones (those that are still within th boundaries of orthodoxy that is).

    If I remember correctly, all of the delegates to the first meeting of the Baptist World Alliance stood and recited the Apostles Creed as an act of ecumenism and a statement of their solidarity with orthodox Christian faith.

    Feel that "liturgy" is from the Catholic/Lutheran tradition, not from NT church and certainly not anything I've seen in the Bible.

    Written prayers, auto-response ("Lord have mercy" IS what I feel when trapped in that nonsense), creeds, robes, candles, split chancel, et al - all smack of formalism and not the type of NT worship scenario with which I feel comfortable.

    And remember, I was Jewish AND attended a Catholic church before being saved, so I KNOW liturgy!

    Why would a BAPTIST church want to immitate a hell-bound and soul-damning Catholic service? :eek:
