Baptist Alternative to myspace

    Over the past year, online “friend” sites such as facebook.com, mypace.com and bebo.com have taken the world by storm. These neat sites are very attractive to our Christian young people. The service that the majority of them offer is the ability to upload pictures to your very own profile page where you can also add your own biography and list the things that you are interested in. People access your profile by adding you as a friend. Friends can leave comments about each other and make new friends.

    While these sites may be both popular and entertaining, they contain a lot of material that is not Christ exhalting. Instead of sitting around complaining about all that is wrong with these sites, I went out and did something about it. I created a similar site just for us Baptists.

    Now there is a place to do everything you do on the other sites, but with other Christians. That way you don't have to worry about stumbling across profanity or obscene pictures. I also added a classifieds section so that we can post our "junk" for other people to buy. Just kidding. The idea is to connect churches needing supplies with other churches who need to get rid of a few things.

    The site is brand new! In fact it was just made public today! The first 100 members will receive a "Charter Member" icon to let everone know that you were one of the first ones to come onboard. There are places to post prayer requests as well as announce special meetings at churches. I hope that you will help us create a Christian alternative to these social spots.

    I tried to sign up and I get an error that says registration session has expired and/or cookies are not enabled on my browser. I do have cookies enabled.

    I've been there. I'm a member there. I'm a guy. No lusting going on that I know of. You know, you might want to check things out before you condemn it. But, that would take some effort. It's much easier to sit back and throw rocks.

    Myspace is indeed the bathroom wall of the internet. But the idea of a baptist networking site is not bad, although how useful something like that would be is debatable. I just wanted to be a 'charter member' of something ;)

    We have been able to network with a lot of like-minded musicians, from all over the country, from our Myspace music page. It's been a very good tool, and it's free. And since we only allow those we know to post on our site, we get zero porn spam. Myspace has been very good to us.

    I've been able to use MySpace to increase my business, but that was incidental. We keep up with "our" kids (my son's friends who hang around here), and consequently some old high school friends found me, then through word of mouth, I increased my business.

    No porn, no spam, and when we find one of "our" kids posting some kind of junk, we can take care of it in short order.
