I have been a born-again Christian and a Baptist for for 22 years. I have also been a high school coach for 17 years (of various sports). I think most of our coaches at Baptist Colleges are missing the boat. They look at athletes and the faith of the athlete is an afterthought. I wish the Baptist College coaches would contact pastors and youth pastors and ask for names of Christian athletes to make up our teams. We should be giving our kids a better look, even if they are not all-American. They will often bring a strong work ethic and a spirit of team work.
Would we be competitive? Well, from what I've seen, not a lot of Baptist Schools are winning the national championship (or even that may conference championships) with non-Bpatist or non-Christian athletes (or athletes without regard to faith). Also a particular athlete who is a Christian might jump at a chance to play on a team with a strong Christian influence.
Moderator:Maybe this should be in the sports category.

Mark, I don't think they care if you can read and write as long as you are one of the best in that sport so why would they care about your soul? That is how bad it is. I can't name a baptist school or less it is Liberty. I wouldn't call Wake Forest, U. of Richmond or Baylor baptist schools, I think they take some baptist money.

Begin rather ignorant of which schools could be called baptist I will refrain from commenting on specific schools and keep my comments general.

I think it really depends upon the focus to the school. If the school is focusing upon bible studies, I rather doubt that they even field a compitive team. If the school simply uses the Baptist name, or for that matter methodist, catholic, etc., then they will recruit for athletic talent and nothing else.

Should each of these types of school look at the faith of an athlete. I would say that they should if they are going to use the Baptist name either as part of the school name or as a selling point for their school. In the end however, even if a school wanted to, there is no way they can really know the heart of an athlete and must take him at his word.
