Jim, this reminded me of when I spoke at a high school commencement. I realized that the most imiportant part was not my speech, so I spoke for about ten minutes.

Afterwards, a man came up to me and said, "Son, I liked your speech. You stood up, you spoke up and you shut up."

I, too appreciate the need for brevity, but some subjects on the Baptist Board do not lend themselves to bumper-sticker answers.

Tom, when I was a pastor, I always minded the clock in the morning service. I kept in mind that I was asking people to go home for lunch and return for an evening service at 7. Many had children and they would get restless as well. They also had cows and animals to care for.

Then, my very first sermon was intended for twenty minutes. I had it written word for word and virtually read it in ten minutes. What now? I turned to reach for the hymnal and dropped the lecturn on the floor then laughed and announced a hymn. We sang for the rest of the service time.

A well thought out sermon can go on for ages, but it can also be presented in reasonable time. I chose the latter.

    Cheers,

    Jim

When on deputation, my husband always talked with the Pastor ahead of time about time table, schedules, etc. Usually they would tell when they wanted slides, when they wanted singing, when the wanted preaching, etc.

One preacher said, "We believe in following the Holy Spirit, son. Just be done by 12."

Oh, brethren, the internet abbreviations I could teach you!!! Here we go with a few:

IIRC -- If I recall correctly
    ITA -- I totally agree
    ICAM -- I couldn't agree more
    IMO -- In my opinion
IMHO -- In my humble opionion
IMNSHO -- In my not so humble opinion
    FTR -- For the record
FWIW -- For what it's worth
    TIA -- Thanks in advance

Those are just a few. I may remember more later...

The computer jargon just makes me feel more like the dummy I am. I haven't clue what they are about, Like using 2 for to ,too or two, and u for you and 4 for for or four.

    Cheers,

    Jim

    ICAM, Jim. [Snort]

I do use the acronyms above so as to be brief. I don't use "2" or "u". That's so "teen". LOL!

Sice using the "LOL" I remembered a couple more:

    LOL -- Laugh out loud
ROFL -- Rolling on floor laughing
ROFLOL ---Polling on floor laughing out loud

    What about "IYKWIM"? Any guesses?

I gotta run to town and get groceries, but I'll be back this evening to see if anyone guessed.

The idea that the BaptistBoard is for long-winded people is preposterous. In the following treatise, I shall endeavor to explain why said premise is untrue, and explore the motives behind such a statement. In future posts, I shall attempt to find a "common ground" with those who assert that long-windedness is pervasive in the BaptistBoard online community. It is my hope than upon the completion of my series of posts, there might be a consensus as to what defines "long-winded;" agreement as to the solution for those who might have a propensity to engage in long-winded behavior; and finally a solution for those who perceive that long-windedness has indeed become a difficulty in their concentric spheres of influences.

    FOREWARD:
"Long-windedness" has been a problem for centuries. The ancient Phoenecians, who invented long-windedness only days before inventing money, sailing, and the internet, were notorious for their long-windedness. They were....

Wait a minute. Whaddaya mean "thanks for proving my point?!?!?!"

There was an episode of Twilight Zone (I think) where a hippie died in a motorcycle crash. He was looking forward to going to Hell. He was placed in a room where "elevator music" played all the time, a couple showed an endless stream of slides from their vacation in Hawaii, and an old man, who was hard of hearing, misunderstood comments that were made and went off on tangents that no one understood. The hippie complained that Hell was boring! Satan told him, "Well, what did you expect? But, you know, there is a room in Heaven just like this one!" So, maybe there are some folks here who think that a Heaven filled with long-winded Baptists would be a great place to spend eternity! :D
