Sorry you believe that because it's not true. However, people will believe what they want to believe so there's very little use in trying to change your mind.

But I challenge you to do your own research and actually check out news stories on your own (first hand if possible) and then compare them to what Baptist Press reports. I learned that hard way that Baptist Press goes out of their way to construct misleading stories, sometimes to the point of misquoting people, to demonize folks from the Baptist General Convention of Texas and the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship.

    Here's one famous example:

The Baptist Press story that misquotes and pulls out of context a statement by Anthony Sizemore and then gets a bunch of SBC "leaders" to condemn the statement and characterize all "moderate" Baptists as those who believe the Bible is just like any other book.

Now here's a transcript* of what Sizemore actually said:

[Sizemore is recognized by the chair (Paige Patterson) and is allowed to read his motion]

My name is Anthony Sizemore, pastor and messenger from the First Baptist Church of Floydada, Texas.

I move that Article 1, “The Scriptures”, of the Baptist Faith and Message be amended to read as follows:

The Holy Bible was written by men divinely inspired and is the record of God's revelation of Himself to man. It is a perfect treasure of divine instruction. It has God for its author, salvation for its end, and truth for its matter. Therefore, all Scripture is true and trustworthy. It reveals the principles by which God judges us, and therefore is, and will remain to the end of the world, the true center of Christian union, and the supreme standard by which all human conduct, creeds, and religious opinions should be tried. The criterion by which the Bible should be interpreted is Jesus Christ.
[Sizemore speaks in support of his motion]

Brothers and sisters, I appreciate the efforts of the Baptist Faith and Message study committee. I commend them for their work and energy in bringing this report to us. And without any hesitation, I believe the Bible is God’s word, and I strive to obey the standards which it prescribes. The Bible is a book that we can trust. The Bible is a book that points toward the truth. With that being said, the Bible is still just a book.

Christians are supposed to have a relationship with Jesus Christ, the Living Word, not a book. Jesus Christ redeems, not a book. In [the gospel of] John, one can read, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” One can continue to read, Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life and no one comes to the Father but through Him. I implore the messengers of this Southern Baptist Convention to look closely at a major doctrinal change that has been proposed, for one must see that the Bible is a record of what Christ has done and will continue to do until His return. I trust everyone present will understand that Christ “is the revelation of God.” He is not “the focus of Divine revelation”, instead, He is the full revelation of God. He is the standard by which Christians measure everything. Brothers and sister, we must be careful today not to elevate the written word above the One to Whom it points. The Bible is a focus [corrects himself] is a record that focuses on the Word, Jesus Christ. He is God’s revelation to humanity!

While you may disagree with Sizemore, it is hard to believe that the seemingly intelligent people over at Baptist Press (not to mention the SBC leaders quoted in the article) actually believed Sizemore thought that the Bible was "just like any other book" as they quoted Jerry Sutton. They simply pulled (and inexactly quoted) a fragment of one line out of context and found a bunch of people to misrepresent and condemn what they claim he said.

Now that's a high-profile story with tens of thousands of witnesses who heard him speak. If they have enough nerve to misrepresent a man with that many witnesses present, how can you trust Baptist Press to accurately report things that are not widely witnessed?

You don't have to believe me, check it out for yourself if you have the moral courage.

    * I created this myself from an audiofile from the 2000 Convention.

It is you who have misrepresented Baptist Press. They simply quoted Jerry Sutton:

Sizemore clearly revealed his agenda in his phone interview with Baptist Press:

You are just wrong. However I believe if you would like to carry this any further a thread in the General Baptist section is more appropriate.

    Nope.

1.) They misquoted Sizemore. They eliminated the word "still" that would indicate that the misquoted statement was out-of-context.
2.) They pulled a portion of a sentence out of the context of a lengthy discussion that said exactly the opposite of what they insinuated in the article. If they didn't do this on purpose, they are completely incompetent as reporters.
3.) They quoted Sutton and didn't give any other perspective or context except for his words, which are obviously not true.
4.) I'll concede that they technically only directly attributed Sutton's opinions instead of "a bunch of people" (I was thinking of a number of others who weighed in on this story in other articles that I read while I was looking up the link to this BP article). However, the article itself, in the first paragraph, falsely portrayed Sizemore's statements as the crux of the controversy that had plagued the convention: "For conservatives, it was a moment of truth. The 20-year battle for the spiritual heart of the Southern Baptist Convention had just been exposed in six words."

Since Baptist Press does not know how to fairly, accurately and honestly present something that was witnessed by tens of thousands of people, how can I trust them to accurately report what Sizemore said in a private phone interview? Furthermore, Sizemore did NOT assert that the "Bible is just a book" even in the Baptist Press version of things.

Yet I somehow have the facts on my side. Will you join me in condemning Sutton's remarks as being defamatory?

Why should I? You don't seem interested or concerned that Baptist Press is printing propaganda, distortions and falsehoods.

I'll let this thread be about Obama since I have already made the case that Baptist Press has a record of not being trustworthy.

Webdog, you don't have the power to exclude people from Christ's body - the church.

On this earth we are obligated to accept the testimony of someone who says that he/she has come to Jesus in repentance and faith.

    Romans 14:4 (ESV)
Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make him stand.

This verse says no such thing.

I think that's a little harsh. I'm of the opinion that to categorically claim he is a believer is just as much of a reach or sophistry as claiming he is not. Only God knows. All we can say is he claims to be a Christian. So does W. Only God knows for sure. We have to take both men at their word. Do you believe W at his word?

"I don't think it [a same-sex union] should be called marriage, but I think that it is a legal right that they should have that is recognized by the state," said Obama. "If people find that controversial then I would just refer them to the Sermon on the Mount, which I think is, in my mind, for my faith, more central than an obscure passage in Romans."

This is just word-smithing on Obama's part. He wants same-sex "unions" to have all the benefits, rights and features of marriage, but he doesn't want to call it marriage. It's a wrong position, biblically. His "obscure passage in Romans" quip shows his disregard for God's Word. But the question I would have for him is: Where in the Sermon on the Mount does it say that same-sex unions should have the same benefits, rights and features of God-ordained marriage?

And which phrase from the sermon on the mount trumps "go and sin no more...".

Or is that just another obscure passage ?

I'm going on record as doubting his salvation. Wishy-washy-candidate hopping libereals who say I can't can pound sand.

NELSONVILLE, Ohio (BP)--Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama defended his belief in same-sex civil unions March 2 by referencing Jesus' Sermon on the Mount and then implicitly criticizing those who view Romans as a binding teaching on homosexuality.

You probably did not intend it, but this is an extremely ignorant statement.

Do you really think that out of the millions and millions of Obama supporters, none of them are Christians?

What you need to do is worry about your own salvation and stop standing in judgment on others who claim to be Christians.

BTW, we are "liberals" not "libereals." At least learn to spell; you look like less of a <personal attack deleted - LE> that way!

You can focus on my spelling mistakes, but you'll make one someday. And someone may point it out to you, or they may show you more grace, and let it go. I let spelling mistakes go, along with the grammatical errors like putting a semi-colon where a comma belongs, :wavey: and try to focus on the meat of what the poster is saying.

And I don't worry about my salvation. Haven't in a long time.

Obama sounds like someone trying to pander to Christians, more than someone who lives with Christ in him.

"In terms of my faith, there has been so much confusion that has been deliberately perpetrated through emails and so forth, so here are the simple facts," he said. "I am a Christian. I am a devout Christian. I have been a member of the same church for 20 years, pray to Jesus every night, and try to go to church as much as I can when they are not working me. Used to go quite often.

"These days, we haven't been at the home church--I haven't been home on Sunday--for several months now. So, my faith is important to me. It is not something that I try to push on other people. But it is something that helps to guide my life and my values."

    - Senator Barack Obama

When someone tells me that the sermon on the mount means homosexual unions are OK, I can doubt they have ever understood why Jesus Christ was on Earth. When someone tells me a verse in Romans is obsolete, I can doubt their walk with God, When someone tells me Obama is correct, I can doubt their discipleship.

Amen to that! Maybe Obama has overlooked the parts in the Sermon on the Mount about the narrow way that is found by only a few (Matt 7:13-14). Maybe Obama has overlooked where Jesus says that we are to deny ourselves and follow Him (Matt 10:32-39, Lk 9:23-26, etc). Obama is promoting the wide, man centered, path that leads to destruction eternally (Rev 21:8, 1Cor 6:9-10, Gal 5:19-21).

Because of his statements I think it is safe to assume that Barak Obama is a heretic. He is focused on allowing sin and seeking to make those in sin comfortable in their sin through his words. However I think we should expect nothing less from a person who has himself not denied himself.

I pray that Barak Obama is born of God one day. That the Holy Spirit will convict his heart of sin and draw him to Himself.
