So I prepared Sunday's service early. I am the one who puts all of the graphics on the computer that get projected on Sunday morning. I had it all done yesterday except one picture that didn't work out (someone sent it to me and it was a thumbnail and that won't work well up on a large screen) and I figured I'd do that today. I prepped early because we had a memorial service today and I didn't want to get to the wire and have to pull a late night so I was a good girl!! Usually I'm working on this at 10pm Saturday night and I'm trying to be better than that.

Well, I just finally went on the computer to find that one more picture and I got it then went to open the program. It opened as the new version and there was nothing loaded - no service, no graphics, no songs, NOTHING!!!! I panicked because when we first tried to upload the new version it tried to overwrite the old version and we had a problem putting both versions on the computer - so I figured that the old one was toast ALONG WITH MY SERVICE!!! GASP!!! I screamed and hubby came running in the room wondering what it was and when I told him almost in tears, he laughed and said that he loaded the new version and renamed the old one so I could run either one. Seems the logo in the dock was the new version instead of the old.

Oh my stars!! There was a LOT of stuff I had to do for tomorrow and I'd have HATED to have had to do that all over again!!!

GASP, PANT.... be still my heart!!

But now I can work on learning the new version, so that's a plus!! :D

The only problem we ever had with a regular church service was when the pa didn't work. I usually shut it off anyway.

    Cheers,

For some reason when I read this it makes me think of a comic strip. I can picture the comic you at the computer working, next box you screaming and pulling hair, and the comic version of hubby in the next room, and the last box you both having a laugh standing over the computer.

Dagwood and Blondie have nothing on the two of you.

LOL Steven. I was SOOOO sick!! All I could think of was "the video!! the graphics I found!!! the songs I need to reload and reconfigure!!" :tonofbricks: Hubby didn't realize that I'd be opening the new version and he was as scared at first when I started screaming. Yes, I really did scream and I don't scream easily!! Last time I screamed was when the dead rat in the garage suddenly resurrected! That was like 6 years ago!

Hubby and daughter are practicing worship right now and I'm going through the songs to be sure I have the words set up right. It's lovely. :) I'm calming down now. :)

Ahhh - Jesus Paid it All :saint:

There is a reason why that thing on your computer is called a cursor!

oh my.....well it just underlines yet another difference between the church I attend and others

    ....no graphics
    ....no hymnals/sheets
    ....usually no music...just acapella

....the sermon is in the priest's head, based on the liturgy of the day.

This does not mean it is better, just different. Incidentally what ARE the graphics for?

Out of curiosity Jim, do you sometimes say the Our Father. Ive gone to a modern Baptist over a year now & never once was the prayer said. In the Presbyterian service, with a literagy, it's said regularly.

Im seriously considering biting the bullet & moving back to that

Is it that you guys just sing songs you know? How do you introduce new songs?

The graphics go with the songs. Let me see if I can find a photo....Here's one from VBS and while it's hard to see, it will give you an idea. It's the words over a graphic of a campsite with a tent and a fire in front. This was actually a video because the fire was "live" - with it crackling and burning. :)

I also make announcement slides to go with the announcements so the men's breakfast has a checkered tablecloth and a breakfast plate on it. The slide for the coat drive had 3 kids in warm coats. That sort of thing.

Finally, I'll add graphics to the sermon if the pastor wants it. In our "mother church", we don't usually do that but in our new church we've been tending to use some graphics. Not a lot but about 3-4 through the sermon to illustrate a point. This week was the Prodigal Son so I had some old paintings of the parable and I also always put the Scripture reference on the screen since we have some new people who have never even felt a Bible. I have a pretty slide with an open old Bible at the bottom and the background is black. I put the reference (like this week was Luke 15:11-32) and then the page numbero of the passage in the Bibles we give out to the new people. I don't put the passage up but just the reference.

So that's what the graphics are for. :)

Oh - since I do the graphics, here's a pic of my "office" in the sound booth. This is where I am every Friday. http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e110/annsni/MyDesk.jpg

To me, it's very interesting. I grew up IFB and now as a Presby see the same thing. We have a lot more Scripture readings and corporate prayers (though not always the Lord's Prayer) during our service than what I grew up with. Personally, I prefer this, though I don't know if one is better than the other -- just different.

The so-called Lord's prayer is not a prayer per se..It is a model of a prayer. I have never recited it, even when attending the Anglican Church where it is recited at every service.

I do not like that kind of ritual in church anymore than I like taking the motion pictures into a service. Leave the world outside. Leave the picture screens outside. Sing from memory or hymn books and read from Bibles, even if different versions.

As the preacher, I determine which hymns will be sung and no one gets to see my sermon before it is preached. How can anyone select hymns for a service if they don't know the theme?

Keep the service simple, preaching is dominant, and worship is first.

    Cheers,

    Jim

I know when hubby does the worship, he'll ask the preaching pastor what the message is about and will make the closing song work with the message.

However, worship is worship no matter what the message is. We use worship to praise God for who He is and if the message is being preached from the Word (which it is), the worship will always go with the message. :)

Good for you but not for me. In my heart & mind, Ive now come to the conclusion that Im a Calvinist & one from the Presbyterian tradition. I dont like sprinkling but Im in accord with the way they conduct themselves & so Im leaving the Baptists. It will be good to once again see a cross in church & the prayers & songs & theology that Ive studied without having to put up with others beliefs. Thanks for the directional shove.
