Bedan or Barak (1 Sam. 12:11)

    Apparently the mother of all extant Hebrew MSS contained an error, although not a very big one, that is perpetuated in most versions to this day. The problem is that in transcription the Hebrew R of Barak is almost identical to the D of Bedan, and the final K of Barak is similarly almost identical to the final N of Bedan. And so the mistake crept in and has persisted to this day. The LXX happens to contain the apparently correct Barak.

    An edition of the KJV printed in London in the 1840's has the following rendering at 1 Samuel 12:11

    And the LORD sent Jerubbaal, and Barak, and Jephthan, and Samson, and delivered you out of the hand of your enemies on every side, and ye dwelt safe.
