I want to learn more about the Lord's Supper. What's the best book on it? Something approachable would be good, but even something more technical would be great.

May I suggest you invest in a good Baptist book on systematic theology, which will not only cover the Lord's Supper, but most other Baptist doctrines.

Most books specifically on communion are from a devotional point of view rather than a scriptural basis for communion.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Ok. Which systematic work would you suggest?

As you may perceive, I am an old man and all my books are dated. Some younger pastor may be able better to help with a modern text.

Cheers, and sorry I can't be of more help.

I mean this with all sincerity...choose the Scriptures first. Use some word study mats, et. and make a thorough examination of the Scriptures and make your own notes. Then turn to the works of others to compare.

I agree that scripture is the final word on any doctrine. Scripture, however, does not give details as to how the elements of communion are served. For this we must use outside books, and here I stand behind theological texts, such as a Systematic Theology by A.H. Strong or some such more modern writer. I am not so familiar with the newer men.

    Cheers,

    Jim

John, if you're just looking for general information the big stores like Barnes and Noble have dozens of titles on communion and the Lord's Supper. Just go to their website and use their search engine. However, I agree with Reformed that a thorough study of the Bible would be in order before you go elsewhere.

    Hi John,

Zondervan's Understanding Four Views on the Lord's Supper is a helpful book. Russell Moore offers the "Baptist" contribution in which he defends a memorial view. Each contribution is followed by responses from the authors for other views.

Two other books that I have found helpful, although they are not Baptist works are Geoffrey Wainwright's Eucharist and Eschatology and Gordon T. Smith's A Holy Meal.
