Here's an email I received that may send a little chill up your spine:
I did check it out. Used my own phone number and my bosses. Gave me an address and a map to both our houses.

That is because you are in the phone book. That information is publicly available. And, Google is not the only place where that information is that easy to find. If you don't want to be easy to find, you will need to have an unlisted phone number.

This is nothing new. Google compiles their list from open sources like the white pages and standard map programs.

Follow the instruction given by Google and they will remove your name from their listings.

That doesn't particularly bother me. What does is the 'surrendering' of basic civil rights, as I experienced this past weekend. Going to the airport, we willingly let people search our baggage. I understand 'why' it is done, but nevertheless, it bothers me.

As long as we're talking about 'Big Brother'. I have a gripe.

We have two trees, on the city side of the sidewalk, that we wanted removed. I was informed that we would have to go to City Hall and get a permit before we could hire anyone to remove them!!! Not only that, but we would have to sign a paper promising to plant two more trees there. So, I ask you; what is the point???

It is public information available on oyu. If your listed in the phone book, then it's all public information. The only other choice in an unlisted number You wouldn't believe how much information about you is open for the public. We found out when we had to do some research on my dads family over a dispute of our share of some family land we will inheirt. A person can start with your phone number, learn your name and address, and then go to your county and find out just about anything they want to, nothing about you is secret, it's all public knowledge available to anyone who wants it.

We have been trying to locate someone via the Internet for several years down in AL and we found about 10 with the same name, but cannot find out if it is the right one! Of course, this person does not want to be found because she would suffer a financial loss. Short of hiring a PI or making a trip to AL, we don't have much recourse.

I have nothing to hide, so I really don't care wot anyone can learn about me........On the other hand, I wonder if they can help me find the pocket knife I lost somewhere around the house? Hmmmm

It seems that if someone doesn't want to be found, they can do it.
    Cheers,

I am the only one in my phonebook. Yet....there are more than one of me on google. Lots of me. But I know who I am.

Just ask the kids...they are always giving me our phone number. If you can figure which one I am...give me a call. Remember........I love to talk!

Jude, Are they searching all luggage? I finally got used to them searching me and my purse. I don't carry on anything, but purse now.

We will be flying at the end of the month...I love to fly, but I am apprehensive of all the searches.

Make sure you comply with new luggage regs. Used to be 70 pound limit, now it is 50 per bag.

I put in our home number and our business number and it came back with my husband's name and our city...luckily the map only pin pointed the city and not our area of residence or business. This stuff kind of creeps me out. But then anyone with a drivers licence or social security number or any other form of I.D. that is in the system...is out there for anyone to look up. That's how I was able to find out about my genealogy research into my family...looked it up on the inter-net.

By the way Jude, I read a post in another forum, where you said that you didn't like the 405 fwy, but the 14 was much better(while you drove from LAX to Bishop? The 14 runs through my town. I used to have to drive the 405 the 170, the 110, the 5 and all those other overly crowded fwy's in California... And the traffic is quite intense isn't it? Over population...thy name is Los Angeles County. ;)

No chills here. I've found countless addresses using a whitepages.com reverse lookup before google added a phone number lookup.

Nazi Germany's Gestapo could find you using a scratch sheet of paper and a pencil---before you knew what was happenin'--there would be a knock on your door!

It has been said that with the invention of Great Britian's "Ultra" machine--that Churchill knew what the Warmacht was going to do 15 minutes before Hitler did!!

And that was waaaaaaaayy before Google and MSN came on the scene!

I use it quite often too and it doesn't concern me. I really like Mapquest. I'm in the phone book and use my real name to post.... so I've allowed my information to be used.

You can gather quite a bit of information on people who have died by going to the Social Security Death Index. You can find their S/S number, place of birth, where they lived when they got the S/S card, where they lived when they died... and more. Anyone can put information about you on any of the genealogy sites. My husband's attendance record and voting record while a State Rep is on a homosexual page that supports homosexual adoption.

Diane--speakin' of perfect attendance--I once made it through the 5th grade with perfect attendance--still don't know if it was worth it--but I forgot the name of my teacher that particular year--reckon MapSearch can pinpoint her?? I need to ask her if I can get up to go sharpen my pencil!!!

    Your buddy,

Everyone is on the system if they drive, vote, have a social security card, work, have a credit card, have a telephone. I try not to think about it.
