Your link is simply an audio recording of the above quote which does not say what you claim it says.

Clearly you didn't listen to the WHOLE clip -- in which McLaren eaborates at length -- and clearly rejects "the traditional idea of hell."

    More in McLaren’s Own Words

    More in McLaren’s Own Words

“I don’t hope all Buddhists will become (cultural) Christians, I do hope all who feel so called will become Buddhist followers of Jesus; I believe they should be given that opportunity and invitation. I don’t hope all Jews or Hindus will become members of the Christian religion. But I do hope all who feel so called will become Jewish or Hindu followers of Jesus. Ultimately, I hope that Jesus will save Buddhism, Islam, and every other religion, including the Christian religion, which often seems to need saving about as much as any other religion does.”

    –A Generous Orthodoxy, (p. 264)

What is a Buddhist follower of Jesus...a Jewish, Hindu, or Islamic follower of Jesus?

How does Jesus save Buddhism, Islam and every other religion? Something is definitely wrong with this picture!

I've seen that book for $4.97 but haven't purchased it.

Is he saying that a Hindu can become a believer and still practice his Hinduism? It seems like this is what he's getting at.

While I do understand to a certain extent what he's saying, it's put in such a convoluted, mumbo jumbo way that even Jesus himself would be saying "Huh?"

He's saying that Jews and Hindus have cultures like Christian culture. While he seeks that Jews and Hindus become followers of Christ, they don't necessarily have to adopt "Christian" culture. An example is Messianic Judaism.

The problem is that their "culture' is a result of their beliefs that are sendng them to hell. Their "culture' is not of equal value to Christian culture. Which is what MCNutty is trying to say. The problem with postmoderns is their devotion to "culture". It is almost a religion in and of itself.

So am I understanding you correctly that my Jewish friend who has just been saved through Jesus (& completed her culture and heritage) is still going to hell because she practices her Jewish roots?

She is as equally proud of her culture and history as you and I. Should this not apply to a Hindu, B'hai, Muslim too? Does she have to do away with her culture and history completely before she's acceptable to we Christians and God?

Revmitchell, if their culture is going to cause them to compromise the essential teachings of Christ, then Hindus cannot be true followers of Christ.

First it is error to lump the Jewish people in with the rest. However, all of them will have to give up much if not all of their former culture to be a Christian. Especially Hindu's and Muslims. If you do not know this then you should study their culture and beliefs. They are in direct conflict with Christianity.

The Hindu faith is indigenous to India, so I can understand that.

But if the Hindu faith and the cultural baggage is going to cause Hindu converts to Jesus Christ to compromise on his teachings, then the culture must go.

I can live with that explanation. I guess that applies to us all, no matter whether we're Jewish, Christian or pink with yellow pokadots.

I am a born again, blood washed Jewish believer in Jesus Christ. Ethnically, I'm still Jewish. I understand the Jewish roots of Christianity, but I am now "in Christ" and call myself a Christian, and a member of the body of Christ. A good study of the book of Hebrews explains why we shouldn't get hung up into the "Jewish roots/Jewishness" of our faith, but move on to "better things", which is Christ.

Hebrews 9:13 For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh:

Hebrews 9:14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

RevMitchell is correct in that people get all hung up into "culture" and forget Christ.

By the way it is technically incorrect to call the beliefs of Jewish, Hinu's, etc as a culture. The truth is it is a subculture. For example the "culture" of India are only those things that all the peoples of India share regardless of religion i.e. Christian, Hindu, and Muslim. Those things that are characteristic of specific religions are subcultures with in the larger culture of the region as they are not shared by all.

Linda, how does a messianic Jew differ from a Christian Jew?
Do they keep more of their culture than a Christian Jew?

A Messianic Jew and a Christian Jew are the same thing....Messianic is Hebrew for Christian...Messiah is Hebrew for Christ. Many, many Messianic Jews don't like to use Christ or Jesus...Jesus is Yeshua and Christ is Messiah. As far as the culture goes, Jewishness remains "in the blood", so to speak....but if that culture hinders or takes precedence over faith in Christ, then it can and does become a "religion".

    Does this answer your question?

I heard of a Messianic Jew who gets offended being called such. They state since they know the true Messiah, they should be called simply a Jew...for that is the promise Jews were looking towards in the OT.

Do they still practice passover, but with the understanding that the meanings point to Jesus?

I have been to churches that have the Sedar and do this...

If a person is raised an orthodox Jew, how much of their religious practices have to be left behind. I know that it would be very hard to subtract the religious practices from their culture, because they are so interwoven.

But since most of the religious practices of the Jewish people point to Christ in some way, I can imagine them adapting them.

    Am I wrong here?

Messianic Congregations do practice Passover and do bring "Christ in the Passover"

So have I...and I believe they are an excellent tool for Gentiles in order that they be equipped to witness to the Jewish people about their Messiah.

Orthodox Jews practice "Rabbinical Judaism" and 99% of that is based on the the traditions of men and the extra-biblical doctrines of the Talmud (which is a huge commentary containing three books within it...the Midrash, the Mishnah, and the Gemarrah), and not on the Bible. You are correct in saying that the "religious practices are interwoven with the culture" ... actually, they ARE the culture...that's why it is so difficult to witness Christ to Orthodox Jews.

Not all religious practices point to Christ because they are not based on the Bible. Don't mix "religious practices" of Judaism with the Biblical commandments God gave the Israelites in the Law of Moses. Those "religious practices" are "works"...Since there is no Temple, all of Judaism is a "works" based religion. The Jews need Christ to save them as do the Gentiles.

Not entirely. There are some excellent resources on Judaism, Messianic Judaism and Jewish evangelism the internet. Here are two of them:
