I agree, we should not compromise on Christ's teachings when one converts. But we absolutely must compromise on the Christian cultural baggage that has historically been attached to coming to faith in Christ.

Classic examples of where Christians have erred on this in the past are the Chinese Rites controversy regarding whether veneration of past ancestors was idolatry and the Indian Boarding Schools where children were separated from their families and cultures to be "Christianized".

Even on this board we discuss cultural issues that some Christians have elevated to doctrine and try to impose on other Christians. Debates about CCM, alcohol, KJVO, dancing etc are all products of clashes of cultures. Christians do not have a good history of being able to separate their culture from faith in Jesus Christ.

I also see the other extreme where folks who have converted from another religion (usually Buddhism because of my Chinese background) experience spiritual warfare because they continue to hold on to faith in aspects or symbols of their former religion. So I do not support syncretism and agree that converts need to lose certain parts of their culture if their faith in Christ is genuine.
