So, I know you're no Calvinist. What was it that made your ugly disposition?

That's on the Desiring God website. John Piper seems calm enough to make up for all of those other hateful Calvinists with some left over for the non-Cals :Laugh

I may be rather rambunctious online, and should NOT be as bad as I am at times, but in person, I am as cool and calm as the center seed in a cucumber.

I think it would be nice to meet in the middle in both realms-- content without contentiousness.

The problem with meeting in the middle is light does not mingle with darkness. If Calvinism is unbiblical, we should not tolerate it. If Calvinism is biblical, we should embrace it. There can be no peace with the devil.

The problem is that there is no middle. You either believe in the Sovereignty of God in salvation or you don't.

Martin, why do you disagree with the fact that I am licensed to carry a firearm?

There is no longer a 'dislike' icon for me to press. I disagree with your turning guns into a jolly cartoon. I think it gives the worst possible impression of Christians.
I dislike the fact that you seem to exult in owning deadly weapons. Previously you described them as your 'toys.' IMO, that fact alone should disqualify you from owning them. However, I understand that it is your legal right to own them and that you are licensed to do so. That does not mean that I cannot disagree with it.

So, my possessing and carrying what you call "deadly weapons" (none of mine have ever killed anyone) is wrong in your eyes? When Jesus told his disciples to arm themselves do you believe He was wrong too?

Was I wrong to own and carry a sidearm for all the years I was a police officer?

Is it wrong for me to be prepared to defend myself, my wife, my children, my grand children, my neighbors, my friends, and my community?

So, using a tongue in cheek euphemism for my firearms, which I do "play" with a couple times a week at the range, should somehow disqualify me of my God given right to life and self-defense? Why? What makes you so anti-liberty? Did you have a bad experience with a law abiding gun owner? Do you have an irrational fear of firearms? Do you suffer from Hoplophobia?

A firearm is a deadly weapon whether you use it or not. My objection was to the fact that you seem to exult in owning such weapons. I believe it gives a very bad impression of Christians to those outside the faith.
In a totally lawless society (think Libya or Somalia) one might need to have a weapon, but in a modern civilized society I see no need at all. I have lived almost as long as you and have never felt the need of one. I rely on the police to protect me when necessary. Our Lord felt that two swords among eleven people was quite adequate (Luke 22:38). You have no Biblical justification for the great armoury you were boasting of in another thread.
No, because that is the position in the USA and many other countries. I am delighted to live in a country where the police are not routinely armed. The police are delighted as well.
You are as likely to shoot one of your family accidentally as to protect them. And don't say it doesn't happen in the USA, because it does, regularly.
It is your attitude to firearms that should disqualify you from possessing them. Bragging about your weapons on an open forum makes it more likely that they will be stolen. And your having these weapons, and even being 'good' with them will not necessarily keep you or your family safe. Billy the kid, Jesse James and Wild Bill Hickock were all 'good' with guns. It didn't keep them all from being shot.
I understand that there is 'liberty' in America for people to carry firearms. I am delighted that in Britain there is liberty for people to go about without the fear that some idiot is either accidentally or purposefully going to shoot them.
[QUOT]Did you have a bad experience with a law abiding gun owner?[/QUOTE]
Never. But my experience of gun-owners is thankfully limited to farmers who keep shotguns to keep down pests. It is illegal, praise God, to carry a concealed weapon in Britain.
I have a fear of silly people who are fixated by guns who should have grown out of it a long time ago. And yes, I do know what hoplophobia means.

So is a hammer. So is a baseball bat. So is a 4000 pound car. Are you against them too?

So your objection is based on your own misinformed opinion of my attitude toward firearms? I think there is a word for that. Oh, yes. It is called "bigotry."

So the fact that you don't see the need means you have the right to criticize my perception of the need in my own country?

Armory? Great armory? LOL! You have got to be kidding. For a Texan I am practically unarmed! :D:D:D

Am I? Really? And what body of data do you base that on? I have carried firearms for over 50 years and have not shot a family member yet. So what body of facts do you base, or is it bias, that uninformed opinion on?
I don't recalling saying it never happened. But accidentally killing of a family member is very, very rare. The primary cause of violent death to a family member is domestic violence.

Really? And what attitude is that? A healthy respect for them? The mastering of their use? The qualification to teach others safe handling? The qualification to teach others proper shooting skills? The qualification to teach others the laws regarding defense of self and others and when it is lawful and unlawful to use a firearm in such a situation?

I don't recall bragging about my firearms. And do you know so much about how, and where, they are stored that you are an expert on securing my firearms? What kind of safe do I have? How big is it? How much does it weigh? How is it secured to the floor? What building is it located in? What is the combination? Who else has access to it? How are the individual firearms locked into the racks inside the safe? And where are the keys to those individual locks? How are they secured?

Better to have one and not need it than to need it and not have it.

I suppose you don't carry a fire extinguisher in your car because if it catches fire the fire department will come (eventually) and put it out.

What is better during a violent home invasion? A cop on the phone or a gun in your hand?

Are you delighted that the violent crime rate in Britain is 5 times as high as it is in the US? I wonder why that is? Could it be that your government has disarmed you so the criminals know you are an easy target?

King George III tried to disarm us troublesome colonials too. How did that work out for him?

So owning a firearm is, in your opinion, silly, but not taking measures to protect your family is not? And you know, somehow, that I am "fixated" by guns? How does that work? Crystal ball? And I should have "grown out of" my respect for, my qualification to own/carry, my qualification to teach others? So, to you, "growing out of" something is the retrograde movement of knowledge, understanding, and skills?

You have some very strange ideas. Do me a favor. Stay in Britain. We will both be happier. :D:D:D:D:D

Yes, I understood that. My point is, if we limit the discussion to content only, there would be nothing to discuss. :)
