On an episode of France's version of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire", this was the question.

    "What revolves around the earth"?
    1. The moon
    2. The Sun
    3. Mars
    4. Venus

56% of the studio audience said the sun! And that is the answer the contestant went with! Needless to say he probably didnt get very far. Watch it for yourself:

Why blame all the French people for one stupid person. Every country has them, as in the example below. Notice, she had already used her 50/50 on this one.

Here in the US, I forget the exact numbers, but only about half of adults realize that the Earth is round and is in orbit around the Sun.

Only about 20% of 6th graders.

Does that mean they just don't talk about the earth, or that they wanted to mess with the info like I saw in a "Zits" comic strip?

the effect of nerves and insecurity on the part of the contestant should not be dismissed. I think many of us have had the experience of suddenly misplacing 100 IQ points and all of our memory when finding ourselves the focused attention of a large group of people, not to mention the rude, unblinking stare of cameras. as for the audience, they may be purposefully voting to try to make the contestant lose, since the sooner she is out of the chair the sooner they have another opportunity to be chosen to replace her.

Any question that asks, "Can the French be this stupid?" I will immediately answer, "Yes!"

"Revolve around" should have invalidated the question. The earth and the moon revolve around each other. The sun and the earth revolve around each other.
