Is this a tautology or is it begging the question?

Either way it doesn't help us in the definition of an hymn.

    That's an urban legend.

Then don't bother to go to my former church. Penny, the piano player, only knows one speed, and that is full tilt. Between her and the choir ripping through the olf redback hymnal they would give an pentecostal choir a run for their money. Many a Sunday the pastor never even got to preach due to the effect of these "boisterous" hymns.

But, I guess that would make these classic songs too "worldly"?

I have to agree with Tim. It is a sad, sad day in which we live. We all need to pack it up, people... God only shows up on Sunday morning, and only to the strands of an organ and hymns at least 60 years old. I wonder what He wanted to hear before these songs were penned? Oh, wait, they were the "contemporary" songs of their day. I guess He liked Gregorian chants...?

    Trotter,

Sounds like some of our meetings, and also a previous church of mine.

Just never got the sermon. The pastor would have been quenching the Spirit if he stopped it the way people were being touched and blessed by God.

Lots and lots of ministry going on, however. During the quiet times people being blessed and delivered. During the boisterous times people being filled and set free of all kinds of problems.

Its good stuff, the Holy Spirit brings!

    Amen.

That's one of the main reasons we left... the pastor would squelch the Spirit. not by intruding on the moving of the music, but in many other ways.

Our current church is not up to Penny's break-neck speed, but we do step it up from what most do, and only about a third of the songs come from the hymnal.
