It violates the constitution and we are not legally required to do it. This current census was crafted illegaly.

Whether people answer or not is for them, and their conscience, to decide.

In this era, information is power. And the government is asking for far, far more information in this census than is necessary or constitutional. When one looks at this objectively, there is one obvious answer: The government wants this info so that they can...
    • Craft more legislation/regulations...because goodness knows, we don't have enough. I desparately need Washington to tell me how much water my toilet can flush, and what kind of light bulbs I am allowed to buy.
    • Take money from people who earned it, and give it to people who did not...the purpose being to buy votes, and entrench themselves in power (and that seems to be a bi-partisan trait).
    • Identify individuals based on group identity, rather than as individuals. For instance, if the census uncovers any overweight, non-English speaking, left-handed, female, agnostic, handicapped, "non-straight," Inuit...they will receive their own Caribbean island as the winner of the "most minor minority" award. All straight white right-handed protestant English-speaking males will be taxed for being "common." (Thank God I'm a lefty. :D)
    • Profile, so that districts for the current party in power can gerrymander the districts, and hurt the opposing party. (Most dem's will do it...but if the R's were in power, most all of them would do it as well).
    • Scratch the back of the "community organization" that elected them (Read: Obama putting ACORN in charge of census-taking).
Sad, it is...the census was never meant to be the circus it has become. I hope that millions of Americans refuse to play the silly game.
    Let's not pretend that

Actually, it's the so-called "right to privacy" issue that you raised that's not in the constitution... but we wouldn't want that to get in the way of paranoia.

Sorry Bub there is no Paranoia here. This census was not created legally. And it is far reaching beyond any other census.

Yes, Jesus said that to the Jewish people who were under the control of an invading pagan power.

So a democratically-elected government that is doing some things we don't like is worse than an invading pagan power (that makes examples of dissenters by public crucifixion) led by a leader who is convinced he is a god?

    Wow. That's some heavy-duty rationalization!

This statement assumes that all is being done legally. And aren't you one that holds the position that conservatives have mixed politics with religion and the church should stay out of politics?

Did you call George H. W. Bush a bully when almost all of these questions were asked of you in 1990?

    Seriously.

If you've actually read through the booklet, most of these questions have been asked since at least 1980. The only new questions involve health insurance arrangements, marital status, and VA disability ratings.

The Bible does not make that distinction. Only when obeying the government directly interferes with our responsibilities to God should we disobey... and then we should be prepared to face the consequences.

I must disagree. There's an enormous amount of paranoia here.

Maybe, maybe not. I'll need to look into it before I form an opinion.

Not really. I've answered almost all of these questions before in 1980, 1990 and 2000. (My father handled the 1970 census for me.)

The only new questions are in regard to healthcare insurance status, marital status, and VA disability status. Most of these questions have been around anywhere from 50 to 100 years.

    I don't think I'm the person you're thinking of...

1.) "Conservatives" (whatever that label means) are not the only ones guilty of mixing politics with religion. It happens all over the political spectrum.
2.) I believe in institutional separation of church and state for theological, historical and practical reasons.
3.) I believe that churches (and denominations) should stay out of politics, but individual citizens (who happen to be Christians) should exercise their political rights in a fair and generous way.
4.) I believe it's fine to have concerns about U.S. social policy (including the census), but we need to leave rampant paranoia behind and deal with facts. Even if the government and this current President is seeking to destroy Christians (a position I don't believe for a moment), God is in control of this situation and we don't have to live and act in fear (paranoia). We need to deal in fact, not speculation, rumor, and wild conspiracy theories.

I haven't seen anyone who is doing that. But your welcome to demonize anyone who has legitimate concerns. It always helps.

You asked a general question and I gave a general answer. I was referencing the entire politics forum (including the numerous anti-Bush and anti-Obama threads) over the course of the last seven years as well as the way Christians often publicly present themselves to the world as people who are on the lunatic fringe.

    That's not demonization.

We did not elect the people who wrote the census. The constitution does spell out how it should be run. And I thought we were supposed to be against law-breakers.

And I should have added this before, but if the O/T Jews approached government & warfare like they were told to, they would not have been under Roman control.

You cannot disobey a law or statute that is itself illegal and has no actual power.

Paul was telling the Christians in Rome to obey the government of God (higher power, rightful authority) not the Roman empire.

And that's all I've got say on that subject in this thread. ;)

I've had problems with the Census for years, and have said so.

Look, we all know that the President doesn't craft, hand out, administer, etc., the census...but the administration does play a huge role.

The erosion of freedoms (much of this happening during Bush II's watch) has accelerated.

More and more invasive questions are answered by census-takers/"government employees" (see my post earlier about my take on the rationale behind Administration's handling of the census).

Like it or not, the census is supposed to be a count to figure out Houuse. That's the Constitutional reason. Anything more oversteps governmental authority.
