I just thought of something funny (at least to me)

If the unleavened bread is sybolic of Christ, and us eating the bread is symbolic of crushing His body, maybe gum can be symbolic of us trying to crush our sin nature that cannot be crushed this side of Heaven.

I'll suggest it to leadership at Church. Pass out the juice. Then the matza. Then the Big Red.

I think the others are chewing gum so the one with the Medical condition doesn't feel singled out. What sacrifices we make for our brothers and sisters in Christ.

    Hey...you're on to something there.

    Gum represents Sinful Man

    Big Red has Cin-a-mon.

    Pretty darn close, eh?

And you'd be wrong about that.

Talk to some of the older folks, especially those who grew up in rural areas and the south. They'll tell you that the spittoons were at the end of aisles next to the pews.

I was talking to an older minister a few weeks ago. He told me it hadn't been too many years prior (of course, to him, that may mean 40 or 50 years ago) that folks would light up cigarettes in the church. Now, granted, he is from Louisiana...

It is not uncommon today to see an older man walking through the church house, albeit, not during service, with a mouthful of 'baccy.

As far as gum, I might chew some every once in a while. Those pews can start to feel awfully comfortable sometimes, especially about 2 oclock Saturday during a 3-day meeting. Gum helps me to stay focused.

Now, I'm not using 5 balls of bubble gum either. I stick of Trident. I don't see the harm.

    Because...you don't eat in church. :p

If you're buying cheeseburgers for after the service make mine a double.

Two double cheeseburgers and fries.

Not a gum chewer myself. Once it loses it's flavor I want to get rid of it right away. I can't imagine leaving it my mouth for an hour and a half, or spitting it out in church, I'd rather die first! Funny, though, concentrating on someone else's gum chewing face helps me focus on whatever song we are singing, and they don't seem to know or care if I'm staring at them!

    love,

I can't chew gum, never been able to even when I was young.

Perhaps this is similar... In the fall of the year when heat begins kicking on again I develop the same problem every year. If I'm in a place that is close, perhaps a little stuffy; my throat closes up and I begin to cough. Not a quiet, discreet little cough either, but a full-blown smokers type cough. I have started bringing something cold to sip when I feel this starting. Before I began I went to the Pastor and explained my problem to him. Telling him that I was disrupting the service by my loud coughing, and the solution I had found for it. I am very quiet when I sip the cold drink, and use slow, deliberate movements so not to call attention to myself.

The Pastor understands the problem and is okay with the solution I came up with.

Never thought if a cheeseburger would solve the same problem. Guess I'm like Saggy...the Catsup stains would be hard to get off my Bible.

Out of courtesy to others you don't chew gum. Unnecessary movement is selfish. Chewing gum is not necessary. Why is it selfish? Because it is centered upon a want and not a need, one that can wait and one that is not necessary. But more importantly it is selfish because such movement is distracting to others who are concentrating upon the teaching of the Word of God. A person has multiple hours to themselves or in far less serious and critical contexts to chew gum. It is nothing less that a thoughtless act.

Now it is true some might chew in ignorance of this but once they are enlightened, further behavior like that is purely selfish and disregards others who are concentrating on the teaching of the Word of God.

What about burping, do you have any sophisticated thoughts on that?

That sounds like an area where you probably have some expertise, I'll leave it to you on that one.

Well, just thought you might want to add that to the official list of Baptist no-no's. You seem to want to add gum chewing to dancing and lottery tickets to name a couple. If you think hard enough, bet you can come up with 100.
