And now for something completely unrelated.

While on a Navy deployment, I sent away for the book "the collapse of evolution" from Chick Publications. When it arrived, the package had the word "chick" all over it. Being a known Christian, I took all kinds of grief about it, so I opened the package in front of everyone so they could know I hadn't ordered porn.

You may say what you will about Mr. Chick and his publications, but we are talking about a Brother's reputation and walk before the world. To off-handedly wish it blighted is to me unseemly.

Dude, that's some hardcare hatred you have going there! Actually, "The Collapse of Evolution" is a pretty good book, JTC's reputation notwithstanding.

We need to pray for Jack Chick. He needs Jesus. But, yes, I do hate what he stands for.

I never did that. I was speaking for myself and myself alone.

I too liked the Chick tracts untill I began to mature in Christ.
I personally have found 2 that I really like... 1 is put out by and for use by the church my in-laws attend. and the other is the 4 spiritual laws. I have used both to present and put the gospel into the hands of unchurched individuals with reasonable success.

I too like Chick tracts and I know that they are effective it is ( this is hard to explain ), they do not seem "serious" enough to me with the times that we are living.
Now I mostly use tracts from the Fellowship Tract League.
They have many eye catching covers with a solid Gospel presentation, no stories.
Still I would have no problem with Chick tracts or their content.

I cannot believe that there are people out there who actually like the vile bigoted hatred of Jack Chick. The likes of Jack Chick and Fred Phelps are a disgrace to the Gospel of Jesus Christ

Chick vs Graham? Let me see...no contest!

    Yours in Christ

    Matt

I don't think I would lump Jack Chick in with the Phelps camp. That's a ridiculous comparison. I don't agree with all of his conclusions or his human sources, but I haven't seen anything he puts out that can be compared with Phelps.

I look at Jack Chick in two ways.

First, he is a guy who just doesn't do his homework. Over the years, he has been duped by people with some serious axes to grind, and Jack falls for them each and every time. In the case of Alberto Rivera, we have an ex-seminarian who has some deep hatred for the institution that may well have hurt him terribly (and believe me, I can relate to that, based on my own experiences in Roman Catholicism and the seminary). As well, he is a con-artist who is wanted in two states for check-fraud (source, Christianity Today, 1981). So what does he do? In order to gain noteriety, he approaches Mr. Chick with this oddball story about being a Jesuit, a secret bishop, and all that. And Mr. Chick, despite knowning that this may hurt his ministry, decides to publish the story under the presumption that the controversy will make him more rich and notorious in the long run.

Another one is Rebecca Brown, a real-life doctor who was disciplined by the Indiana Board of Physicians due to her oddball treatments of patients whom she was convinced were possessed by demons. After losing her license, she makes up this strange story about witches and demons around her former hospital and how she has courageously fought against the horrible, evil forces that control even her fellow doctors, as well as nurses, the police, and the courts (insert X-Files theme here).

That is one way to look at it.

The second way to look at it is that it is all true. Alberto Rivera was in fact a Jesuit who found Christ and then was made to "disappear" by the Vatican. They erased his ordination record, made up false charges of check-fraud against him, and then had him killed by some secret formula that gave him cancer. And Rebecca Brown? She has already been established to be a real doctor, so the evil forces that run everything had her removed and then made to look like a kook. If this is all true, then the Vatican would make the CIA look like amateurs!

So what is the truth? I really have no idea. I am certainly no fan of Roman Catholicism, but I have a hard time believing that they can just wipe you out with just a phone call and a few strokes of a keyboard. But could it be true? And could I, myself, be some secret Jesuit who is out to destroy the Baptist Board? See what I mean? Paranoia may destroy you, as The Kinks once sang.

So for me, the jury is out on Jack Chick. At best, he is a guy who has done much to expose the ultimate evil in our world (the Vatican and the forces of Satan in our government). At worst, he is a dupe who has been fooled at his expense by some serious con artists.

I would have to say that before this thread, I was completely unaware of all this controversy. I'll admit, some of his material was way out there, but in particular I used the tract "This Was Your Life." I used the tract without regard to the intentions of its author. I did absolutely no investigation into the matter, because the tract looked good, and still does.

However, this guy may be to controversial for me to continue using his stuff.

I will say that I have several hundred copies of "This Was Your Life" in several languages. While in the service, I travelled routinely to China, Russia, Japan, Korea, Philippines, Thailand, India, and the Arabian peninsula. I was able to take that particular tract with me everytime I went.

Let me begin by stating that I think some of Chick's tracts are good, some are bad. There are other tracts I would rather hand out than most Chick tracts, but a few are really good.

This thread is truly unreal. Here we have Mike implying he can know that Chick is not saved and then claiming the Chick material is worse than porn and he would rather have porn than something from Jack Chick. Then, we have Matt saying that Chick is in the same league as Phelps regarding hatred of homosexuals? Catholics?

It does seem to be the liberal way, does it not? "I am accepting of everyone except YOU." Billy Graham with his blatant denial of some fundamentals of scripture is extolled, while a tract printer (who nobody really knows much of anything about) is deemed unsaved and his material proclaimed worse than pornography.

I have seen posts on this board in the past from people who were brought to Christ through Chick tracts, and have known a few in my life. Let us be careful what we say, as we will be held accountable.
