    as exemplified by rabbinical Judaism.

Right from the start (Exodus) the priests "spiritualized" the Law, assumed the penalties were maximum punishments, not mandatory punishments, and devised "spiritualized" work-arounds where the Law seemed impractical. In the Bible report of history, they were only following God's negating (negative) example.

    Consider

    Leviticus 10:1
And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of them his censer, and put fire therein, and put incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the LORD, which he commanded them not.

    Numbers 3:4
And Nadab and Abihu died before the LORD, when they offered strange fire before the LORD, in the wilderness of Sinai, and they had no children: and Eleazar and Ithamar ministered in the priest's office in the sight of Aaron their father.

    Numbers 26:61
And Nadab and Abihu died, when they offered strange fire before the LORD.

Nadab and Abihu were the only people who ever violated this particular law?
No one else is mention being punished for this violation.

Consider the travels of the Ark in 1st & 2nd Samuel:

    2 Samuel 6:6
And when they came to Nachon's threshingfloor, Uzzah put forth his hand to the ark of God, and took hold of it; for the oxen shook it.

    2 Samuel 6:7
And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Uzzah; and God smote him there for his error; and there he died by the ark of God.

In all that traveling and ever since, God only killed one person for touching the Ark?

    Consider

Acts 5:1 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession,

2 And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles' feet.

3 But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?

4 Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.

5 And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things.

6 And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out, and buried him.

7 And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in.

8 And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much.

9 Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out.

10 Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband.

From the first Pentecost to Revelation these two people are the only people who have lied to the Holy Spirit? Most every person on this sub-forum of BB has been accused of (effectively) lying to the Holy Spirit. How many of us have dropped dead over our keyboards in the last 10 years?

THUS the punishments listed in the Bible are maximum penalties, not required punishment and God expects us to use common sense when interpreting his commandments.

For example, there is not evidence the 7th year was strictly observed :

    Exodus 23:11
But the seventh year thou shalt let it rest and lie still; that the poor of thy people may eat: and what they leave the beasts of the field shall eat. In like manner thou shalt deal with thy vineyard, and with thy oliveyard.

    Leviticus 23:41
And ye shall keep it a feast unto the LORD seven days in the year. It shall be a statute for ever in your generations: ye shall celebrate it in the seventh month.

    Leviticus 25:4
But in the seventh year shall be a sabbath of rest unto the land, a sabbath for the LORD: thou shalt neither sow thy field, nor prune thy vineyard.
Leviticus 25:3-5 (in Context) Leviticus 25 (Whole Chapter) Other Translations
    Leviticus 25:20
And if ye shall say, What shall we eat the seventh year? behold, we shall not sow, nor gather in our increase:

    Numbers 29:32
And on the seventh day seven bullocks, two rams, and fourteen lambs of the first year without blemish:

    Deuteronomy 15:9
Beware that there be not a thought in thy wicked heart, saying, The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand; and thine eye be evil against thy poor brother, and thou givest him nought; and he cry unto the LORD against thee, and it be sin unto thee.

    Deuteronomy 15:12
And if thy brother, an Hebrew man, or an Hebrew woman, be sold unto thee, and serve thee six years; then in the seventh year thou shalt let him go free from thee.
