Church of the 1st Purchase

    In the book "To kill a mocking bird" mention is made of a black church called the church of the 1st purchase. So called because the blacks pooled their wages together and bought the land. I realise the book is fictional but suspect that it is based on the kind of things that happened in the deep south in the 1930s.


    Can any BB member give any information on literal Chruches of the 1st purchase, did this actually happen ?
