I don't understand what the problem is with this. This is Bible. 1 Cor 11:14 Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?

The rest I would have a problem with too!
</font>
People who quote this scripture to support their views on hairstyles, seem to always neglect to read on down to verse 16 where it says "but if anyone seems contentious, we have no such custom, nor do the churches of God.
A person can make the bible say almost anything he wants, if willing to take scripture out of context.
Churches that get hung up on such things ,totally miss the point.

If then, we are to disregard that verse do we also regard the verses in the beginning of that chapter that talk about Christ being the head of man and the man the head of the woman?

Christians are to know what God expects. Paul is saying not to get hung up on this if someones wants to argue the issue.

People who don't want to live according to God's word always have the same reply.

Good answer Elijah, people want it to say what they want no matter what, always willing to twist it or ignore it.

Fraser, man will make up what the bible doesn't tell them, like how long is too long for men and how short it too short for women. Then judge others based on their personal opinions and preferences, when as you pointed out scriptures does not tell us(hair length).

So are you saying there was no salvation UNLESS one is also baptized and partakes in the Lord's Supper? Or are you saying those were just other things you had to do? Sorry, just a little confused there.
I'm not saying there should be no accountability whatsoever, because there should, but harsh and public discipline performed "immediately" flies in the face of the teachings of Christ and of the epistles. Glad you made it out.
Have you mentioned what denomination you are in now? Baptist of some type, I would assume?

Its has nothing to do with disregarding any verse. It has to so with taking the verse in context with the others. Paul clearly makes the point very clear in 1 cor. 11:16 that the hair length thing is a custom of man, not of God. And please dont imply that I dont want to live according to God's word, I approach each day with prayer and ask for guidance from the Lord to help me do just that. Can we not disagree without turning it into a question of character?

6. Something that is missing in a lot of churches today is the understanding of the spirit of the law. The Bible commands men to have short hair. Well, how short? To be on the safe side as short as you can get it!!! That way your safe. That would be following the spirit of the law besides the letter of the law.
Secondly, High Priests had long hair, to stand out from everyone else.
Were the Priests all wrong?
Priests were Old Testament Jews. Christian men are clearly told to have short hair. That's just what the Bible says.
Thirdly,if people would quit judgeing other people from there out ward appearance, maybe more people would get Saved!
On the contrary, nobody will get saved without outward standards. Why? Because they'll see hyprocrites who believe in modesty but won't practice it! God cares about standards. That's why their in the Bible! You shouldn't compromise Godly standards for lost souls.

7. That is not what the Bible says. In 1 Corinthians 11:16 the Bible says," But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God." But let's compare scripture to scripture! The Bible says that "where contention is there is every evil work". Titus 3:9 tells us to leave off contention. If there wasn't evil contention in the church in the first place than there would be no hair issue. All men would just obey the scripture and stop trying to justify their sin.

I would be carefull about mixing and matching verses to get the word to say what you want. These verses in 1 cor, 11 ,stand alone and address a cultural issue of hair, not a Godly issue.( by the way my hair is very short, so I'm not taking up for myself.) One of the best testimonies I ever heard was at falls Creek (SBC church camp in south Oklahoma) from a reformed drug addict who came to Christ. The fact that his hair was long didnt seem to hinder his witness, as many came to the lord through his preaching. I have used him as an example in a few of my sermons concerning how we judge others and how God see's us. Does God look at our heart, or at our hair? Our heart no doubt. Does He judge us on whether we wear a tie or a T shirt? I think not. If a certain hair lenght were necessary for a Godly person, the Lord would have left us with instructions on what an evangelical hair do would look like( high and tight, flat top ,or burr cut). At what length does sin start? If it touches the ears do you sin, or must it get below the collar? [IMG]

All our righteousness are as filthy rags.

Trying to win God's approval by the lenghth of hair is legalism.

The only way to have God's approval is through the blood of Christ.

For years I would cut my hair, because when I'd ask a pastor about the hair-issue, they'd always say something like "oh, that was for back then..." The same thing with the pants-issue.

I've never worn slacks to church, but am ashamed to say I did start wearing them at home in the '60s. (My husband has NEVER put on a dress)! ;)

Now I do realize some cults won't allow their women to cut their hair at all because it will send them to Hell, so they say.

I do have long hair & I wear dresses/skirts at all times...but not to "get to Heaven"...but because of a very Holy God.

The perfect way to please God is thru' obedience. [IMG]

Oh really? Lets look at the way a great preacher of the bible adorned himself. Matt.3:4 "And John himself was clothed in camels hair, with a leather belt around his waist: and his food was locusts and wild honey." HMM, doesnt seem like outward appearance was especially a priority with him.( he even ate bugs for crying out loud!) Why do you suppose this was so? How about this; He was so filled with the Holy Spirit and preparing the way for Christ, that all that outward appearance stuff didnt matter so much. ( and I seriously doubt he took a weekly trip to the barber). Why cant we leave the legalism to the pharisees, and put our effort into winning souls to Christ? When I stand before the lord one day I would rather be rewarded for leading people to Him, than be complemented for my hair cut.
Ask yourself this, If John the Baptist walked into your church today in this attire, would you listen to his message ,or escort him out?

If we wouldnt judge from the outward appearance, more people would be Saved!

Why is it every time I make a comment someone always twists it for wrong?

How many bums have you witnessed to lately?
Have you been to skid row to witness?

I am guilty like alot of Christians!
Alot of judging from the outward appearance.

For those who cant understand what I am saying here!
You can sure tell which baptists pushs there personal convictions. And not Gods!

It is our job as Christians to witness to the world. However this isn't a topic about that.

Frazer, I think it was said his Pastor required his hair to be a certain lenghth. The Bible says, nature teaches that it is a shame for a man to have long hair. I know that men in the military have to short hair. At one time, my husband had a job in which his hair couldn't touch his collar.

We live in a society where a Christian will obey every law and ordinace of man, to include paying taxes that support sodomites and the murder of unborn babies, yet if the Bible says anything about outward appearance it doesn't really apply.

I for one, want to look like I follow Jesus and not the world. My appearance brings people to me and gives me a chance to witness to those who are truly searching. I would rather tell someone about Jesus who wants to hear, than to look like I stepped out of Hollywood in my latest fashions, or I just came out of biker bar and go around telling people that Jesus died for their sins and we can keep living like we want because all He wants from us is love and to believe.

Seems like we kinda got off the subjest of Church or Cult, and went into the hair thing.
I think I'll start another thread about what are essentials , and what are non essential things in the church. I'll start it in general Baptist discussions. see ya there. [IMG] [IMG]

The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 2:13,"...comparing spiritual things with spiritual." The problem is that you don't want other verses so you can misconstrue the Bible into saying something it's not saying. Also, are we so shallow as to think that God only cares about our heart? Hopefully not! God cares about ALL of you including your heart! If God didn't care about dress than why is it all through out the Bible. In Isaiah 47:2 the Bible makes very clear that uncovered hair equals nakedness. The problem is people just don't want to change. They want to blend in with the World instead of being separate like the Bible commands us to be.

This subject on Church or Cult,
Has a little to do with my issue on length of hair! it was one of the many things, taught to me!
as well as not being around family members, who dont beleive. To separate yourself from them.Dont date another Christian, that doesnt go to your church. It was not right if a woman wears jeans.
If you missed a service at church. The question was " are you backsliding"?
Church or Cult????
We are the light of the World!
When God tells us to be separared!
I beleive He means, not to partake in the sin!
But some people think we have to wear a gown.
If a woman wears jeans,as long as they arent painted on,Whats wrong with jeans?
Also, how are you suppose to witness to your loved ones, if your told not to see them?
Regarding, again the hair issue, Are you sure back in Jesuss time they had short hair?
We know He had a beard!!
Today, short hair doesnt stand out, because most everyone has short hair!
So I guess we are conforming to the world with short hair! makes alot of sense doesnt it?
So Mr Baptist I sure hope you have long hair!
