well, he knows enough of both languages to do original research for his NT theology Phd in the Greek, and have it approved and published!

Book was about the holy trinity, study of equality and subordination in gospel of John.....

I don't see how anyone with any understanding would consider the NIV and HCSB to be in the dynamic equivalent category. JesusFan was correct to say that both are mediating versions --a balance between the more dynamic equivalent and the more formally equivalent translations. But both lean a bit toward the formal side a tad.

If you'd compare the HCSB and NIV with the NASB/ESV you would find many similarities --especially with the latter. The HCSB and NIV are much closer to the NASB/ESV than you mistakenly believe.

Your error, though common,is just as wrong as those who regard the NLTse as a paraphrase.

Though I do prefer those versions like nasb/Nkjv for 'serious study", as believe reflect more accurate degree the Greek text, DO use both HCSB/NIV for reading and teaching purposes....
Currently, actually just using to browse thru the NT letters of paul the NLT version, have found it interesting, in a good sense!
