The sun is shining brightly here, but it remains very cold...just remember, as long as we keep the Gulf Stream, England will enjoy higher temperatures,,,you are on the same parallel as Northern Canada......

Sheila, hello! Moving your study into the greenhouse sounds lovely. I've told MY Jim that I'd love to enclose our deck with screen so we could be outside more often once the bugs get bad. I love being outside! I love feeling the warmth of the sun in spring and fall!

What flowers do you have in the greenhouse? I've sadly neglected my house plants the last few months with working and worry. I don't have many tho.

Would you believe it's 58° here right now and I just saw a family walking past (in the shade) and the children had on short sleeve shirts! I talked to hubby and he said our Nick has been outside playing for hours. He's got on a sweatshirt and a fleece jacket tho! We have a lot of trees.

The forecast is for it to get very cold here next week, -14 or so. And snow too, ugh...horrible.

Wow! The wind chill must be horrible when it gets that cold! It up to 58° now.

Jon took his friend from Connecticut to Stone Mountain for the day. I'm glad it's turned out pretty nice so they can climb the mountain. I think that they'll go to Helen, Georgia tomorrow for the day. That's an old 'German' town with a lot of tourist trap type shops.

 

Diane...so Nick is at HOME today, and you're at WORK watching "Finding Nemo"?

Jim and Sheila...I keep seeing you guys talking about temps like -14 and -20 and worse. Is that "F" or "C"? (-14C is about 6ºF; -20C is about -4ºF!! Just trying to put it in perspective!!)

I was in Barrow, Alaska in February once; walked on the frozen Arctic Ocean. It was about -30ºF...colder than I have EVER experienced in my life! You would walk outside from being inside, the cold would hit your face, and your eyelids would literally freeze shut! It was bizarre!

It was on that same trip I went dog-sledding in Fairbanks!

(That was when I was young and stupid.)

Yep.... we only have Finding Nemo and Two Towers and that one is too loud for me! I just keep hitting replay. I think I know it by heart!

Well the owner and his friend stopped by. I got paid. Hubby called twice to keep me company and a lady wants to come in and see some space we have for rent.

It's so boring with nothing to do. I don't have any of my favorites here so can't even surf easily. I found some really pretty French sites for Graphics but I can't link them to home. I was trying to find something Irish with Roger on it. LOL

OK, Jim and Sheila normally give temps in celsius. Not sure about Roger...I think he may give both. And not sure about any of our other friends outside of the USA.

So, to help us all be on "common ground" ( ), I found this handy-dandy little temp converter since I REALLY can't figure out how the formula works!! It's VERY easy to use...even for ME!

Hello Jim, CJ and Diane,

I grow mainly fuchsias in my greenhouse, although my main interest is propogation, so I like to grow as much as possible from seeds and cuttings. At the moment it is full of over wintering fuchsias, wall flowers, sweet williams, arum lillies, osteospermum, and oleanders. Other things too, but I can't remember what. I am hoping my little frogs will be back next spring. Not quite sure what frogs do in winter, anyone have any idea? I had the cutest little frog, only about an inch long in my greenhouse last summer. Who knows, maybe this summer Rob will put up my other greenhouse for me.

Oh it sounds LOVELY Sheila! I can imagine the fragrance even now!

We get the little green frogs too. I know that the toads burrow into the ground for winter. We have a very large toad who has taken over an old chipmunk hole. I don't know what they'd do in your area where it gets so terribly cold tho!

I love the new pic.

My frog was a brown one, but very tiny just like the green one. Boy, could he make a noise tho'.
My greenhouse is 10 ft x 6 ft and the one yet to be put up is 8 ft x 6 ft.

It is mostly the herbs with smell good in the greenhouse Diane, as fuchsias, beautiful as they are do not have a perfume.

I will take some pics in the spring. Not much to see at the moment as all is "put to bed" in boxes for the winter to protect from the cold as we can't really afford to heat the greenhouse.

I expect you have lovely plants in the U.S. I have never come across. And I expect maybe the plants I am familiar with grow bigger over there too.

It's amazing to me how many different plants there are and how plants common to us in New England are not even known here in Georgia! I had one lovely plant called Goats Beard.



I'd love to see the pictures when they bloom!

Webmaster loaded a new photo for me today. When we met Helen in Atlanta, she mentioned how long my hair looked in the photo from Christmas 2003. I did take my glasses off for that one. Maybe someday I can have cataract surgery and the new treatment for drusen and won't need to wear them anymore!

I LOVE flowering plants; however, I live in an apartment and my balcony faces due west, so it gets the FULL afternoon sun which gets very hot. Not conducive to flowers! I did find hydrangeas grow very well in the full sun, but I had to water them morning and night to keep them from shriveling up.

When I had a house, I had a large yard, and LOTS of flowers! My favorites were tulips, crocus, roses, and gardenias. And I did manage to keep them alive!!

But now, all I have is green plants, and they do very well! I have several potted plants that, for now, are in my dining room for the winter, and I will move them back outside in the spring. I have a wall on my balcony that would look GREAT with a trellis on it, so I may do that this spring...just need to find a green plant that will grow on it.

Looking at the picture you posted for a moment I thought you were talking about a plant I know of as astilbe. LOL. In photos they look quite similar.
