I'll be teaching a class on basic bible study methods next month.
I'm concerned that July might not be the best month to start such a task... but will do it anyway (maybe again in early January when everybody's thinking 'new start'.

    Anyway ...

I was on my thinking machine, mowing the lawn this afternoon and began to ponder advertising the class as a way to learn computer or electronic bible study methods.

Of course the kicker is you have to know basic bible study methods first
... and you have to be familiar with the basic tools.
... before you can begin to learn what's available and how to use it.

    So.... my question,

    1. What FREE software would you recommend and WHY?

WHAT is available within that software platform?

    2. What INEXPENSIVE software would you recommend for beginners and why is it better than the free software.

    Free software:

http://www.e-sword.net has a lot of resources free as well. There is a user site with many more resources but they got hacked. If you decide on this one I could send you a cd with a lot of stuff. The user site has been down for about a month so don't know when they will get it back up. Could let you know if you want.

http://www.theword.gr has some of the same resources as e-sword and can convert e-sword resources.

e-sword has some tutorials I think that could be of help.

both are great programs and quite powerful.

I have been thinking about the same project for sometime when I have opportunity to teach it.

    edit:

There is also http://www.bible-explorer.com/ though it is more of a Bible library.

    and http://www.logos.com/ldls a library system.

    Also http://www.onlinebible.net/

All also free but resources not so much on the first two. Online has many resources but is a bit clunky to my way of thinking but a good program.

There is a free basic computer course/book that might be of help to some students. There is an xp and a vista version.

I would second the recommendation for e-sword because it's free, it works pretty well, and there are many, many Bibles and commentaries for free downloading. (You also can get the NET Bible, with limited notes, for free, but only from the NET site.)

Net.bible.org is also a good site with the NET, KJV, Greek and Hebrew, articles, even references to hymns.

At our last church we had a computer lab in one of our buildings, and I taught an intro to computers class using e-sword.

And I incorporated the e-sword tutorials..

Be careful of the very calvinist site bill mentioned, have read some ??? comments about them, have no idea whether true or not, just be careful and look over the site.

I ordered their cd when they were first starting off number of years ago but have not had anything to do with them since.

Sorry to be slow to respond this week, computer's in the shop getting a new monitor, I had to fire up the old one yesterday.

It looks like e-sword offers the most for free.
I'll probably go with it especially after seeing the tutorials.
Unfortunately it's down this morning, I'll try again this afternoon.

I've got a class of about 6 people including a mom and her high school grad son, a grizzled new believer and a few others.

Thanks guys, any other thoughts will be appreciated.
    This is gonna be fun.
