Who celebrates Constitution Day now? I certainly don't. I see the Constitution as a beginning document which must change over time to accommodate a changing country.

I am not aware of a Constitution Day, but it's not a bad idea. Yes, the Constitution legalized slavery but as the country moved away slavery and the Supreme Court (though not exactly in a clean manner) moved to bring an end to slavery (sorta again not exactly spic and span clean there). The beauty of the Constitution was the amendment process which allowed for the correction of errors, which slavery was, no question. The South was on the wrong side of the argument and the wrong side of the overall direction of the country. Again I see no need to celebrate. Learn the history, absolutely, celebrate the decision no.

In Observance of Confederate History Month...

.... I went out and bought my very own "Confederate States flag" to celebrate along with my fellow Southerners. I always thought these flags were kind of neat, and if it weren't for this post, and the many different opposing views, I probably would never have bought the flag.

Thanks for all those who vehemently opposed this PM, I am now waving my Confederate States Flag, too...

Whatever your take is on the states' rights issue, the slavery connotations are there, and it was a horrible injustice on behalf of our country.

And the individual who said Confederate History Month would balance out Black History Month needs to rethink that position. I am a teacher who believes African-American students need to know about their history and where they came from. The rest of us need to know it because it's world history and it helps us keep our view of the U.S. in perspective. It reminds us we've done some pretty bad things. Maybe we don't need the whole month, but it needs to be taught.

No we haven't. The folks who did those things are dead and gone for the most part.

Okay, okay. We haven't. But its consequences are still felt in our society.

    CONSTITUTION DAY

    CONSTITUTION DAY 2010

    OBSERVING CONSTITUTION DAY
    learn about the 39 signers

Too bad that public education doesn't bother teaching such a minor event in our history

I celebrate the cause for States Rights - that is one issue the South was totally right about.

Now, Jaigner said "the slavery connotations are there, and it was a horrible injustice on behalf of our country."

You are absolutely right about the slave issue. Its a shame that President Lincoln never freed the slaves from the Northern States! Its a shame that many US Generals had slaves.

Do you know why many Blacks served in the Army of the CSA?

And of course, I'm sure you know what the Constitution of the CSA said about slaves?

Or perhaps because people are still racist, just a shot in the dark there.

    BA-BAM!

Obviously, some use it as a political tool, but tensions are still deeply embedded in a lot of us, and those of us who are Christians need to recognize this is inexcusable in ourselves.

I don't have everyone figured out, but to deny that some of the "heritage loving" that is seen promoted at Confederate History type events isn't just veiled racism is to be obtuse and unaware of the unfortunate realities of this country. Not everyone is a racist and racism doesn't just exist in whites, but a Confederate History is just a bad idea all the way around.

Racism is all the fault of the left, no one on the right has ever used racist tactics. Come on now

Are you serious? Do you think the left is responsible for everything bad that happens in this country?

People are still racist. That's a fact. They were raised that way, grew up that way, and it festers in their hearts even today. They can be white or people of color. They can live anywhere.

It's not the left, it's everywhere. And it's because of sin.

    Bolded mine

No, just about 95% or so!

Seriously, I don't know about the actual %, but I DO feel that the better part of this country's ills are "liberal/left democrat" related!

And no, the Rs aren't much better, especially today, as way too many of them are the same as the above cited "villians", and the only difference is they are "liberal/left republicans"!

Racists come in all colors and it is equally present in them all. But what actually festers racism is the lefts use of it for a political tool to gain power.
