Yes. No question about it for those of us who believe that the activities of consenting adults should be outside of the government's control.

It is good to know where Libertarians and Isolationists stand on morality and the suffering of others. They just don't care.

I don't buy your argument, Joseph, that unless one supports bigger government that one does not care.

We will just have to agree to disagree, brother.

Tell me what we can do in the real world, not in your imaginary utopia, to stop parents from gambling their entire paycheck while their children starve without government intervention, and I would be happy to go along with you.

The fact is there is nothing that can be done, not even by the government. The only hope for people being responsible in their actions is God giving them a new heart.

The government certainly could do some thngs. One thing they should not do is to legalize and support evil.

I disagree that the government should ban evil in general. It should do so only in those cases where it violates the rights of another person.

That is where we disagree. I say we should get involved when it hurts children who can't do anything to help themselves, and you don't seem to care.

There are thousands of things that adults do that hurt children - such as parents dying early because of overeating, unhealthy eating, lack of exercise, etc., etc., etc. How far do you want the government to go "for the children"?

I don't know why you are arguing so much about this. You authoritarians have been getting your way with the government passing tens of thousands of laws over the past several decades "for the children" and to "protect" people from themselves. It appears to me that your side has already won. Folks like me are simply voices crying in the wilderness and I, for one, have no hope that the size and reach of government will stop growing during my lifetime.

To usurp a quote from your blog: "the solution is not more government."

I would guess that more children are harmed by alcohol and drug abuse. Are we going to make them illegal as well? Let's not forget overeating and smoking.

If we are going to legislate morality, then where does it stop?

Every single law is a legislation of morality. My right to swing my fist ends at your nose. Your right to smoke ends when it interferes with my right to breath. Your right to gamble ends when it interferes with your childs right to food and shelter. Unfortunately, some people do not give a hoot about the rights of others and do whatever they want to no matter what. So, we have to pass laws and give penalties to enforce them. This is a classic case where law has not kept up with technology and congress is trying to fix that.

This fallacious argument is way overused. "Think of the children". Sheesh!

As has already been pointed out, many things that are legal can potentially hurt children. Do we dumb down all television programming to the level of Barney or the Teletubbies, since kids could be watching? Ooops, we can't allow the Teletubbies, Sponge Bob, or Ernie & Bert, because they have been accused of being gay. :BangHead:

Do we allow people without kids to gamble, but not those who have children. I for one, do not want to see us become an authoritarian society. (Well, we have largely become one already).

Then, who gets to decide what is bad for kids. Parents must take some degree of personal responsibility. If they abuse, we step in, but otherwise, big brother should just butt-out.

    Another great post, MP!

I am glad there are still a few people who support the ideas expressed in the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. constitution.

The only silver bullet then is to raise kids on mars or elimiate them entirely since every adult activity seems to hurt them.

    Amazing.....
So the biggest threat to our children is not our educational system,
it is not the number of children that live in poverty right here in this country,
it is not the number of children that are abused physically or mentally,
it is not the number of children that are not eating correctly or getting enough exercise,
it is not even the number of children who are addicted to drugs and/or alcohol,
    it is INTERNET GAMBLING!!

Wow, I didn't see that one coming......

i heard a report actually that people who win from gambling end up bankrupt most of the time, but that helps them learn and get back on track financially...

And I am glad that there are Christians that think more of the Bible than the Declaration of Independence or constitution.

Gambling is a sin, and I cannot believe there are Christians that support it..

    Hi Tim!

I don't think this is an "either / or" choice. The Bible deals with individual morals and behavior; an individual's relationship with God.

The Constitution is supreme law of the land and deals with our secular government.

    Two realms.
