It's summer here in Aus, the season has started, and it is almost time for the Ashes to begin (I'll explain what the "ASHES" are to those outside Aus and the UK later)

So, as real sport has begun I intend forwarding brief reports on just how well Australia beat the English during the series, It starts on Thursday .. so time to get a bit of knowledge on the subject ....

"The encyclopedia defines cricket as "a bat and ball, team game played during the summer in the British Isles and in several countries influenced by the British, such as Australia, New Zealand, India, Pakistan, South Africa, and West Indian nations"."

Don't yuall run backwards? How is it that you bowl in order to pitch and when you pitch and get out three in a row on one pitch it is called Hat-trick (with no puck in the game). If you don't get a run your a maiden (is that short for wuss?) and if the pitcher misses he is a wicked (wicket) maiden (hehe). Too many weird rules and you play with 12 players :1_grouphug: and a test is for five days and I thought 3 hours of football was rough. :tonofbricks:

I ignore cricket, but never ignore a chance to put the boot into foreigners ;)

A couple of pitchers putting a fastball right in to you now and then can make the 5 days very long :D

First test match - Day 1

First Test, First Day, Brisbane.

Australia 346 runs, for the loss of 3 wickets. (for the uninitiated - anything over 300 in the day is considered good)

Australia'a day .... Ricky Ponting (Australia's Captain) won the toss, then scored another century. Quite a good start for him. Rather ordinary bowling from England.....

http://content-aus.cricinfo.com/australia/engine/match/249222.html for the scorecard.

First time for everything..... ;)

Bob, you remember a few years ago when the poor Poms couldn't take a trick in the field? Story goes that someone asked Bradman how he thought he would go against their "attack".

The Don answered "I'ld probably get about 50."

"But Don, your test average was almost 100, why do you think you only get 50 against this side?"

"Well, you have to remember I am over 80 years old now....."

First Test Match - Second Day

First Test Match - Second Day, another good one for Australia.

Australia continued batting and finished with 602 runs for 9 wickets .. then declaed the innings closed (10 wickets gets the side to be all out, so probably not generous, just a timing thing) Ricky Ponting top scored, but faied t make a double century, he was out for 196. Andrew Flintoff of England ended up taking 4 of the wickets, the one English bowler who did well.

England started batting ... and at close of play they were 53 runs for 3 wickets down, a good performance from the Australian bowlers, a soor start by the English batsmen.

From this position Australia should probably win, but cricket is a funny game (funny perculiar that is) and a good performany from one of the Poms could make a difference. A lot can happen in the 3 days left to play.

Regards
Bob

My old ma and another elderly lady were on a bus going into Brisbane city to catch a movie at an art house and shared the bus ride with 2 groups of jovial, sunburned hatted young men in tearing good spirits, one Oz and the other Pom supporters.

The old girls had a ball with the young fellas who engaged them in conversation...mums comment was I had to turn down the hearing aid they were all that loud....reminded her when we were children and the decibel level in the house. She thought they were all very well behaved!!:applause:

First Test Match - Third Day

Australia first innings 602 runs for 9 wickets Declared.

England first innings 157 all out .. a truly disapointing result for England, the only score of any note was Ian Bell who made 50 runs, A great performance by Glen McGrath, (AUstralia's star fast bowler) who took 6 wickets for 50 runs.

Australia second innings 181 runs for 1 wicket, will continue tomorrow.

Is looking more and more like Australia will win by a VERY large margin.

Regards

First Test Match - Fourth Day

Well, day four, and finally there was something for the English fans to cheer about .... still going to lose by a lot, but at least a couple of their batsmen have put in creditable performances and it may make the mext match a bit more even. The English still have major bowling problems though... they couldn't take a wicket in the Australin second innings.

The Score
Australia first innings .. 602 runs for 9 wickets, declared.
England first innings ... 157 runsall out
Australia second innings .. 202 runs for 1 wicket, declared
England second innings ,,, 293 runs for 5 wickets, will continue batting tomorrow, the final day.

Collingwood scored 96 runs, Pietersen is 92 not out, the main contributions to the English score, both looked good.

Ricky Ponting, the Australian captain, did not go out to field in the English second innings, he had a back injury ... speculation is rife as to if he will be fit for the next test.

Score card .... http://content-aus.cricinfo.com/australia/engine/match/249222.html

First Test Match - Fifth and final Day

Australia won, very comfortably, so now lead the series 1 - 0. The next test match starts later this week in Adelaide.

England pushed their second innings score to a creditable 370 runs before being all out. If onl;y they had done as well in their first innings it could have been a match ...

Australia won the match by 277 runs. Ricky Ponting was awarded the 'Man of the Match' trophy.

http://content-aus.cricinfo.com/australia/engine/match/249222.html for the complete scorecard.

Regards
Bob
