Sen. Ted Cruz announced Friday that he will introduce a constitutional amendment to limit the number of terms members of the Senate and the House of Representatives can serve.

Cruz, along with Rep. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., made the announcement in an op-ed in the Washington Post, and said their plan is a great way to implement President-elect Trump's plan to "drain the swamp." The proposal would limit members of the Senate to two terms, while members of the House would be limited to three terms in office.

Probably the most effective way to #DrainTheSwamp.

I may disagree on the length of service time allowed, but I think 18 years per chamber is sufficient.

I wouldn't have a problem if the House was 4 terms.

I believe two terms is sufficient. No one should seek to make a career out of it. Causes too much power and corruption otherwise.

I am sympathetic to the idea of terms limits. However being realistic this has no chance of becoming law. Too many professional politicians in office where they get paid for doing nothing. This has been painfully clear by the obstructionist GOP congressmen/women the last eight years. They are not going to give up the gravy train.

But what if their constituents wanted them to be obstructionist?

My congresswomen just lost her primary and was replaced by another republican because she wasn't obstructionist enough.

Rather unconstitutional I'd say. The founding fathers warned of professional politicians.

But that was just one - out of 435.
Keep in mind that most people want term limits - except for their representative.

My post wasn't a repudiation of term limits, just a disagreement with CTB's characterization of obstructionism.

With Congress' track record, for the most part the less they accomplish the better.

Having two terms would mean legislators would not have experience. Guess who does? Lobbyists.

IMO, we'd end up with more corruption with that short of a time frame. I know corruption is present, but that's why I'd allow up to 18 years per chamber. You can have some people with the knowledge to know what they are doing, and they'd have the time to mentor the next leaders.

I'd be more ok with two senatorial terms because that's 12 years. But four years in the House wouldn't be enough.

If constituents would write their representatives in Congress and put the pressure on it would pass.

Nope. It wouldn't make a difference. They'd be writing themselves out of a job. What incentive would they have to listen to constituents if they know they couldn't be held accountable at the ballot box?

12 years maximum sounds about right for House members (6 terms); 18 years for Senate (3 terms). Enough time to get experience, write some bills, represent your people, then GET OUT. And no lobbying jobs afterwards.

I could live with this scenario.
