And the morale of this story that you shouldn't post as true stuff that you read in a children's book when you were 13.

Troops/Companies are commanded by Captains. Squadrons/Battalions by Majors. Regiments, in this case the Seventh, are commanded by senior LT. Colonels or Colonels. During the Civil War, bevet ranks were used to give a capable officer sufficent rank to command a given unit. It was considered a temporary wartime rank. Custer by war's end IIRC commanded a brigade of cavalry in the Army of the Potomac.

Duh, Squire. You are entirely right on the troop designations. Thanks for the correction.

In today's Army, battalions are normally commanded by lieutenant colonels. The regiment is no longer a functioning unit of command, although the designations are retained. The next level is the brigade, which is commanded by a colonel.

Custer...the real one or the movie
    versions? [IMG]

Complex, most certainly a main of
    his time, reckless, brave, foolish,
strong leader, deeply in love with
his wife. To say the least a "colorful"
    character.

Custer was instrumental in the Union victory at Gettysburg, blunting a Confederate cavalry attack meant to hit Meade's center from the rear.

Although highly successful and loved by his men, Custer was known to be "vainglorious" hard to control, and impulsive.

    That eventually did him in.
