Angels And Ages: A Short Book about Darwin, Lincoln and Modern Life by Adam Gopnick.

Both were born on the same day, February 12 and year and there are many similarities between the two in both religion and life, despite what many think about both.

Darwin was earlier trained to be an Anglican priest whilst Lincoln avoided all churches and preferred a personal religion.

The book dispels a lot of myths and falsehoods about both men.

An excellent read whether one believes in evolution or not. For instance, Darwin never lost sight of the church and God, as his followers did, and Lincoln was not a churchgoer at all. Interesting.

    Cheers,

    Jim

    Hi Jim,

This sounds like an interesting read. The book does not appear to be stocked by Amazon. Any suggestions where I might get a copy?

I was just thinking about this 'coincidence' the other day while hearing news about both's birth anniversaries.

    Interesting

HERE is a Newsweek article on the topic

I wonder if any other single day has seen the birth of two such historical figures?

Ulsterman, I will check for an online sales outlet for you. I bought mine at a book store.

Caution: it is not a debate on the merits of evolution, but talking about the two men and how they relate. A few people may be shocked.

Roger, I found it interesting as well because of all the claims Americans make about the Christianity of the founding fathers and that they just refuse to admit the deism that predominated. Or so it seems.

    Cheers,

    Jim

By the way, the book was only $13.00 Cdn (£5.00 roughly)

It has always been known that A. Lincoln had excentric religious beliefs, though he was descended from Puritans. I've never heard anyone question the Christian faith of the Puritans.

BTW, Lincoln was not one of the founding fathers, as he wasn't born until the 19th century.

Both of his parents were Baptists! (Lincoln). I realize he was not a founding father per se.. He was still considered foundational to America; the developing America.

    Cheers,

Many people seem to take pleasure in debunking the American narrative re: the founding fathers, and so I guess Lincoln will do in a pinch, even if he wasn't one!

But he in fact descended from Puritans. See HERE

Funny how history texts mix up family facts about certain people. I suppose one could loosely say Lincoln had a Puritan background and another text says his parents were Baptists, but he never attended a Baptist Church.

Wonder what people will write about some of the more recent presidents in 50 years time.

No wonder us foreigners get things all turned about....

    Cheers,

    Jim
