OK, I admit I am braindead tonight!!!!

    NO JOKES. lol

I remember hearing a sermon about David being in a cave with a bunch of misfits, and how the misfits were a blessing to David...

I have searched and searched, but I can't find a reference to this.

Do any of you know where this may be?

Again, I am probably overlooking it, as I am braindead today!!!

    Never mind, I found it...

    1 Samuel 22:1-2
    (1) David therefore departed thence, and escaped to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father's house heard [it], they went down thither to him.
    (2) And every one [that was] in distress, and every one that [was] in debt, and every one [that was] discontented, gathered themselves unto him; and he became a captain over them: and there were with him about four hundred men.

If God can use that bunch surely He can use us!!!!
BTW, it sounds like BB even existed back then!!!! lol

Are you sure you weren't thinking of Herbie on the Island of Misfit Toys?

It's a little known fact that Julian Lennon made a drawing of his class-mates in 1966 and called it David In The Cave With Misfits....His dad John wrote a song about it, but it didn't quite get the popularity of the other song John wrote about one of his son's drawings....

    Look I just drove 300km in a taxi, I'm tired, gimme a break :p

Somehow or other David just kinda sorta "rubbed off" on all those misfits---makin' them as fit as David!!! Fit for the fight!!!

And us, too!!! Bunch of misfits as we are----crowd up in a cave with the Lord Jesus----won't take long before Jesus rubs off on us!!! Fit for the fight!!!

    Amen???

I know this thread is a couple yrs old, but I am preaching on this passage this Sunday.
    1 Samuel 22:2 KJV
    (2) And every one [that was] in distress, and every one that [was] in debt, and every one [that was] discontented, gathered themselves unto him; and he became a captain over them: and there were with him about four hundred men.

And it is striking to me how many Christians today ignore the misfits in society.

David took this bunch of misfits and built a mighty army...

What kind of lessons can you see from that?
Do you see David as shadow of Jesus?

What does it mean to you that people are distressed?
What does it mean to you that people are in debt?
What does it mean to you that people are discontented?...

What would happen if we as a church would start reaching out to the misfits of society...

For instance... take this fictional character named Kelly...
Kelly is a single mother of 2. She has never been married, and her 2 girls have 2 different fathers who doesn’t want anything to do with them.
She goes out with her friends on weekends and is looking for love in all the wrong places. She has a minimum wage job that will only work her 25 hours a week. She is renting a runned down trailer off a slum lord. Her trailer has windows broken out, a leaky roof, and pipes under the sink that leak…and the land lord has refused to fix them, but she doesn’t want to move because she can’t find anything else for $200 a month. She struggles to keep her utilities on, and has learned how to play the system.

She knows which agencies will help her and which ones won’t. She knows when the food pantry opens, and the workers at DHHR know her on a first name basis. A treat to her is finding enough change in the couch cushions to take her 2 girls to McDonalds to buy something off the dollar menu.

She lies awake at night, and thinks back to her days in high school. She was popular, she was a cheerleader, captain of the volleyball team, and could have any guy she wanted. She had plans on going to college to be a LPN. And made good grades.
Her life was bright, and happy… until that day the nurse at the health department told her she was pregnant. IF only she hadn’t went out with him!

She wonders is there anything in this life worthwhile, will her life get any better? What will her daughters grow up to be like. There has got to be a way out of this, but how?

What would you say to Kelly?

We just encountered a situation like that recently. We attended a new baptist church in town for a few months (kinda secretly) while attending our home church which is located over a half hour away. Sometimes I think the church location isn't a plus when trying to encourage my family to get involved.

Anyway.... A lady similar to this came to church, sat by us, and practically no one in the church spoke to her. It was embarrassing, it's a small church. Later the Pastor told us when he was here with his kids he didn't want "that type" coming to church. Yep, I sure can pick em

So I REALLY appreciate our church.

Funny, that pastor told us in his sermon that he was divorced because he had many affairs and he was an alcoholic. But he can't relate to her enough to witness to her

We are to be patient and kind to others. Even if they aren't our kind, do we really want them burning in hell? Helping others doesn't mean we are mingling with them, and we can still keep our standards up in a loving manner. The money and posessions we own are not ours, so when we donate or help others, it's God's money/posessions being transferred to others. When we help others, and accept them as they are, both parties are blessed (usually).
