I bought my wife a Remington 16 guage shotgun for bird hunting. Not very common in the States, apparently.

For self-defense against people, I carry a Makarov 9mm. Enough firepower without being overkill.

For self-defense against wildlife (when camping or fishing and don't want to carry a rifle), I'm looking at getting a .45-70 revolver. We have big wildlife here. There is no overkill.

When I lived in Austin a man shot and killed a man who was breaking into his car in front of his home. It was okay then to protect your property.

In my opinion, the pump shotgun is the best for home defense for several reasons.
    1) If you are aware that someone is in your home, announce in a loud voice that you have already called the police, that they are on their way, that you are armed and willing to defend yourself, and finally, jack a round into the shotgun, (a sound universal in nature, transcending all known languages). This will usually make MOST people leave faster than they entered.
    2) MOST of the time break-ins will be at night, and no matter how good you are at the range in the daytime, it is hard to see, aim, and hit anything in the dark, (with one shot at a time) especially after just waking up . With a shotgun however, after determining that there is a real threat, one can poke the barrel around the corner, fire, and clear out everything down a hallway or most of a room.
    3) Most rifle and pistol bullets are like the energizer bunny when it comes to walls in houses, mobile homes, apartments, etc. They keep going, and going, and..... There would be nothing worse than missing a burglar, the bullet going through several walls (as in apartments or a house) and killing old Mrs. Brown in the next apartment or your own kid in the next room. Shotguns on the other hand, will not penetrate as many walls as a bullet.
    4) Shotguns are a lot cheaper than most handguns, and are less complicated to use than a semi-auto to those who don't shoot much.

Biggest problem is they are a little tough to "conceal and carry". Or keep under the pillow!

I know what you mean Ed. I had a hard time sleeping with my shotgun under my pillow until I learned to lay it flat!

I'm not in real danger of hitting anyone with a stray shot, or any ricochets. It's a matter of preference, I guess. A .45 is a whole lot easier to reload than a shotgun.

I don't really care what the law was or has become.

If I have the capability(gun, knife, club or weapon of any kind including my bare hands) any intruder in my home is dead.

They're not there to fix the fridge.
