Jefferson Indicted on 16 Counts of Bribery

(CNSNews.com) - Indictments charging Rep. William Jefferson (D-La.) in a long-running bribery investigation were announced Monday, federal officials said. A Justice Department official familiar with the case said the indictments outlining the evidence against Jefferson are more than an inch thick and charges the congressman with crimes that could keep him in prison for up to 200 years. In August 2005, investigators raided Jefferson's home in Louisiana and found $90,000 in cash stuffed into a box in his freezer. Jefferson, 63, whose Louisiana district includes New Orleans, has said little about the case publicly but has maintained his innocence. He was re-elected last year despite the looming investigation.

The fact he was reelected is amazing to me. If found guilty, throw the guy in jail and throw away the key. This is a violation of the public trust. He is certainly no better than the Republicans that got in trouble last year.

Being re-elected was only the beginning of the foolishness.

"Jefferson is an active and senior member of the powerful Ways and Means Committee and its subcommittee on Trade.

He is also a member of the House Committee on the Budget.

He serves as Co-Chair of the Africa Trade and Investment Caucus as well as the Congressional Caucuses on Brazil and Nigeria.

Jefferson is also the current Chairperson of the Board of Directors for the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, a non-partisan, non-profit, public policy, research and educational institute founded by members of the Congressional Black Caucus in 1976."

That is outrageous. Well, all I can say is, they are going to have to find replacements for all those positions. Maybe he should serve his prison term in a freezer and stare at his money all day.

Actually, your list here is incorrect. He was only on the House Small Business Committee, and he stepped down from that today.

If the man is guilty, then he needs to go, but until then let's not hang him out to dry. Espeically by stating facts that aren't so.

    Pull in your horns.:wavey:

It was true when it was posted and I took it directly off Jefferson's own website.

It may have come from his website, but it was not true. He was off the Ways and Means for a while now.

You could have simply stated you got the facts from his site and you were sorry you/they were wrong.

U.S. Representative William Jennings Jefferson is now serving is eighth term as a Member of the United States House of Representatives. Representing the 2nd District of Louisiana since 1991, he is the first African-American to be elected to Congress in Louisiana since Reconstruction. Jefferson is an active and senior member of the powerful Ways and Means Committee and its subcommittee on Trade. He is also a member of the House Committee on the Budget. He serves as Co-Chair of the Africa Trade and Investment Caucus as well as the Congressional Caucuses on Brazil and Nigeria. Jefferson is also the current Chairperson of the Board of Directors for the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, a non-partisan, non-profit, public policy, research and educational institute founded by members of the Congressional Black Caucus in 1976

It is correct that Pelosi removed him from the commitee, even before November, but certainly carpro cannot be faulted for taking info off Jefferson's website.

I beg to differ. I am not saying he posted this on purpose as bad information, but when the information was revealed as bad, he should be person enough to accept his mistake through their website.

Their website had bad information on it.
    He posted bad information.

Both are wrong. Mistakes happen. Carpro seems to think I have it out for him in some way with the 'horns' comment, I just wanted people to know the truth. He isn't on those committees now, and he stepped down from the last one his was own.

Honesty is the best polcy don't you agree?

So he's a liar as well. (Shrug)

Get real. Why would I be sorry Jefferson lied? Get your apology from him.

If any apology is due, it is you that should apologize for accusing me of intentionally posting bad info.

    Denials expected.

I really dont care what specific offices he held. He violated the public trust, and just like the scum of the earth republicans that preceeded him, I hope they throw away the key. I will guarantee you one thing, had I done that, I wouldnt be free until the next hearing. I would already be under the jail.

Yea, I see the same old spin on things. Some things will never change huh?

People can decide for themselves what truth is in your postings. Both of you were wrong, their website and you. Their are more responible because they know better. You however posted, and when found out that it was wrong, instead of saying opps, I made a mistake and here's why.. you just continue spin things away from you. The politicans we talk about daily here have served you well in teaching you how to deflect blame.

Also, try as you might to spin it my way, there is no need for me to apologize. I only posted that your information was incorrect, which it was no matter where you got it from. Nice try though...

I agree, if he is found guilty then he needs to have the book thrown at him. Don't misunderstand me in this thread. I am not FOR him, but I would like the truth to be stated instead of lies.

He is just as corrupt as all the other politicans, and things will never change until we demand it.

The best way to get rid of the infrastructure of the democratic and republican party is a Holy Spirit revival that captures the heart of every American. How long do you think the likes of these organizations would last if that were possible?

And you never disappoint me when it comes to your spin on things. :) There are members of your "right" on this board that accept when they make a mistake, and then there's you.

At least now people can see where you stand and what you stand on.

The main point was, no matter where the information came from it was wrong. You posted it as fact and it's not. You perpetuated the false information, and then when confronted with the truth, duck and dodged instead of admiting the wrong doing like some others have.

I forgot for a moment.. You're never wrong on these forums.

BTW, I emailed their website and let them know about it just as I did you. I will let you know their response if and when I get one.

Well it was exactly as I said. You can think otherwise, but it doesn't matter.

True, however they are still wrong and misleading "facts". They are not accurate no matter who posts it. A lie is a lie is a lie.

I never claimed you posted it for spite, in fact I have stated otherwise, but when you found out they were wrong, you should have done more than duck and dodge. Rove has taught you well over the last 6 years huh?

I am ending this as I know you will never agree with me on this. But at least the truth about this is out there for people to see for themselves.

So very true! I have said this before, if we witnessed as hard as we fight our "positions" of Right vers Left, we would win more souls to Christ AND change the world for the better at the same time.

I wonder, has there ever been a Revival for a country before? :)
