But should I be punished and required to pay more taxes to take care of someone else's kids? It's up to us as parents to take care of our children. We need to consider that before we have them. Years ago, if you couldn't afford a dentist you pulled the tooth out and that was that. Now, if you can't afford a dentist, it's suddenly somebody else's job to pay it for you.

I know that sounds harsh, and I know that many working folks cannot afford good medical/dental care. But I have a real beef with people who refuse to take responsibility for their own children and expect me to do it.

I'm very glad God didn't have that kind of attitude toward our well-being.

Yes. We should be willing to "pony up the dough" for the least of these in our society.

God also commands people to work for a living....

    Not just give them handouts.

Guess what, just since I posted on this thread, dentist ads have appeared on my screen along with an ad for Huckabee for president. ACK! Big brother is watching!

Ok, I'll post this and run before someone clobbers me:
If you want to pay for other people's medical and dental bills, lets just zap all the murderers rotting in jail and save ourselves a bunch of money feeding and housing prisoners. Then we just might HAVE the extra money to help the innocent!

    I'm outta here!

So do we only help the sinners once they are reformed?

    Bear in mind Rom. 5:8.

The problem isn't giving to people willfully... it is the Government MAKING us give to lazy sluggards that refuse to quit having kids because they are rewarded by the IRS with the Earned Income Credit.

I love to help people, and if a family needs something, I would be the first to help... .but don't socialize medicine and make me pay for something for some poor lazy family that my family can't even afford....

I can't afford dental insurance, but I am expected to pay for Bubba's kids down the road that drinks his money away, and can't keep a job because of hangovers!

Rom 13:6 For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God's ministers, attending continually upon this very thing.

    Healthcare is important to me.

I work for a living; are you sure you could keep up?

We have to balance that with the "won't work? Won't eat" passage.

    And I'll admit that's a tough balance.

I know pastors work hard, Tim, but in all seriousness, I am surprised at the callous attitude from one who makes a living off the goodwill, donations, and generosity of givers. Pastoring is work, no doubt. But it isn't the same type of stress trying to keep a job in an age of outsourcing of jobs overseas, people losing employment through no fault of their own, making mortgage payments (which pastors with parsonages don't deal with either), and having health coverage tied to tenuous jobs. I'd expect a little more compassion. People don't always not work because they are lazy or have character flaws.

While I agree with your general sentiments, getting health coverage for a pastor isn't the easiest thing in the world in Baptist churches.

I understand that...but to see one who makes a living because of the generosity of others, I expect to see a little more sharing and compassion and a lot less "I got mine, tough luck to you".

I was kidding, as you know, and I understand that being a pastor requires unusual hours, but believe me, I work much harder physically than any pastor I have ever known.

Yea, follow me around the machine shop for a few days, and let's see how much slowing down you do. BTW, I don't operate a computer-controlled machine, the engine lathe I operate is totally manual.

I want as much government in my life as it takes to counterbalance the effect of corporate America in slowly making me into a slave.

Without government regulation and the unions, we'd still have child labor and sweat shops in this country. It isn't being owned for the government to step in if business gets too abusive.
